Tried today with 17x40 and ran 138 at 9,100 rpms...........second run with 17x44 sprockets and went 136 at 9,400 rpms..........Then advanced the timing by 2-degrees and ran 134 into a 3-mph headwind.

Will begin tomorrow with 16x44 sprockets.

5th.......................

Windy on Wed. AM................made a run at noon and went 134ish with 16x44 at 9,800 rpms and 3 mph head-cross wind.

Parked and packed up

Had a fun week with many old and new friends. My 4-man pit crew was a BIG help. My conclusion is the motor is down 2 or 3 HP due to different base-gasket and head-gaskets with resultant loss of compression. Now I have to decide what to do for 2023.......we plan to be in Alaska for the entire summer of 2022.

I can see it's a bloody struggle and easy to be discouraged working for a very few runs once a year.

I also wouldn't doubt the salt is faster or slower certain years. Good work, you have the support of everyone here.

A BIG THANKYOU

to all of you for your support

While I was not as fast as I needed to be, the event is great fun and I enjoy the challenge. My crew says they anticipate more in the future. There were a lot of new faces and bikes at the event. It was personally rewarding to answer questions from some of the riders concerning tires, handling, and how to slow-down after the timed mile without sliding the rear wheel.

One rider experienced a near fatal heart-attach at the starting line......fortunately someone was able to revive him. It was announced at the next day's rider's meeting that he was having quadruple by-pass surgery. The hat was passed and many stepped-up with cash to help with expenses.

I have thoughts of getting more power from this motor............and/or going to a bigger motor and use my existing chassis. Several riders were taking detailed pics and asking questions regarding stability and narrow tires.

Sat. - Thur. leading into Labor Day weekend.

Ran the bike today after initial clean-up. Now to REALLY wash all of the salt away and investigate why I don't have enough power

Very little salt on the bike as opposed to other years. Maybe I can re-use a chain to two on my other bikes.

After my second run I checked the carb-bowls because I could hear a slight problem on one cylinder. I discovered a significant amount salt in #3 jet-bowl so cleaned all and flowed fuel to make sure all was clean. Re-checked the bowls after another run and nothing. Today I removed the carbs and found salt-slush in #4 and a few grains in #2 & #3. A then found the source

..........I had installed new fuel lines and clamps but apparently the clamp to #3-4 fed by the right-side tank was not sealed. No salt was apparent in the fuel-rail, but #4 main bowl has salt residue in the threaded area at the bottom. There was no evidence of a fuel leak and the jets are clean. I will pull the head over the next week or so.............I don't think salt burns with any positive effect on power

Hi Den,
After a trip to the lake The clean up is extensive hey !
Re the hose clamps not tight, Are you sure the salt or residue is coming in with the fuel ? more likely its from the carb vents as the whole carb area at full noise is just a dense cloud of ultra fine salt air that is drawn into and out of as temp changes on the run and return to the pits.
Its quite common and difficult to deal with, the most common way Ive seen is small fuel filters on all engine and carb / tank breathers.
Nothing you haven't thought of I'm sure Dennis , just raising the issue so others are aware.

Due to my ram-air intake system, the bowl vents have long lines leading into the air-box. More things to check but likely from the fuel rail.

Dennis, if there were leaks in the fuel rail, it would have leaked fuel out, not sucked salt in...
