1978 550K back to original pipes and center stand
« on: April 28, 2015, 06:21:34 PM »
Hi folks,
I haven't posted for 7 years, basically because my 78 550K has been running great. A couple of weekends ago I scored a set of pipes and a center stand at a swap meet. Pipes look pretty good, couple of small rust outs on the right low rear, patchable. Center stand went on easily (thought it would be a nightmare). Pipes easy too, except far right cylinder has and has had a broken off stud with broken off easy out in it for years, still can't get it out.

So I start it with the new pipes, and find the idle a bit low (?). Take it for a ride and it felt different, maybe smoother through the power band. Definitely sounded different, the old header was like a trumpet, but sounded mean as all hell. All seems tight, but I'm wondering about jetting etc, I have no idea what I have in there, and if they were changed at some point for the header. What is stock size? Anything else I should think about?

Thanks,
-ugmold550

38 slow, 90 main are stock I believe. (listed for 550 K3)
If you have stock airbox and filter, those will work, if not, all bets are off.

42 slow
90 main
12.5mm float height
IMS 1.5 turns out

Those are the factory settings for the '78 550K. But yeah, if you don't have the stock air box then you'll have a little different jetting to figure out.
