'78 CB550 Fork Brace Cover / Emblem?
« on: March 23, 2014, 08:08:38 AM »
Many (most?) Hondas from this era have a trim piece that covers the front of the lower triple clamp, typically with a Honda emblem on it, did the '78 CB550 not have this?  Mine does not, and I can't find a good picture of the front of the stock setup to know if something might be missing.  Any information or pictures would be appreciated, thanks!

Not sure. I know the CB750 had one. Are there threads for the screws on the lower clamp?

I have a very nice front cover with screws. Hard to find.

Shows on the 78 CB750K. I believe it was just the 77/78 k models.

I think so, too. And it was hard to find a good one for my K7.

CB550s didn't have this. More's the pity. Maybe you can mod one to fit?

Thanks for the quick replies and confirmation that the CB550 didn't have one.  I really like the look of one being there, so I'm thinking of adding one, and I wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking a possibly missing part, I'll figure something out.

If I remember correctly the emblem stay mounts to the lower tree. The emblem then screws on to the stay with small screws.

Might try one from a cb360.  They had 'em too and may be more "available".

Here is what I selected, its from an early '80s CB650, hopefully it will look nice once received and installed.

The next generation nighthawks had them I believe as well as the CB650s. Looks like an eighties thing.

Isn't the 650's fork spread wider? I kinda like the way that would clean up the space under the headlight.
I'm interested to see what you do to make it work.
Normally I would have 3 years of 650 and a 550 to play with for mix and match , no 550's in the shop today, can't play , have to watch.

I received the part in the mail late yesterday, it is chromed plastic with two holes on either side of the 'Honda' lettering which must be for screw mounting to a stock bracket on the CB650, so I'll have to make a bracket to support it (I knew this would be necessary, but once installed it will be behind and not visible).  I held it up to my CB550, and the overall width is such that there is about 1/2-inch or so of overlap on the lower clamp on each side.  This particular trim piece is curved, and so if positioned properly the curved ends will touch and blend into the curve of the lower clamps, which I think will look pretty nice.  Pictures this weekend...

Today I fabricated a bracket using 1/8" thick X 1/2" wide aluminum to mount the CB650 fork emblem on my CB550, and attached it using a longer bolt to replace the stock bolt securing the front brake switch block.  the width, height, and curvature of the CB650 emblem fits the CB550 forks very well, I dare say it looks about as 'factory' as I could have hoped, I'm very pleased with the look.

The first picture is my home made bracket, curved to match the curvature of the emblem, the outer two holes are tapped with M4x0.70 threads so that the emblem can be secured/removed from the outside without disturbing the bracket, the second and third pictures are the finished installation.  If anyone else wants to try this too, let me know, it was fairly easy to do.
