How to remove Honda logo on tank?
« on: March 21, 2014, 10:59:12 AM »
hey guys, im looking to remove my Honda logos on the tank, they are pop riveted in there.

I did a quick google / youtube search on how to get rid of the rivets, but I cant seem to find if the rivet will fall back inside the tank?

If I drill the rivet out, will I have a piece of metal bouncing around everytime I hit a bump on the road?

If I understand you correctly; the logo plate is secured to a plate in the side the tank. That plate, is riveted to the tank. There are 2 smaller rivets that hold it to the tank. IF you undertake removing that, you may be in for more work than you want. Doing so will require welding the riveted holes shut, or, removing the entire plate, then filling the crevice.

If you just want to "suppress" that area from appearing through a painted tank, then I'd recommend you use some "heavy" or fiber filled Bondo and fill the background. Let cure completely, then sand smooth and surface it out with some blended Lightweight filler.

If you do drill out the rivets, you should consider lining the tank afterwards unless you re-weld the holes up and pressure test it.

Hope that helps/answers your question?

Which bike? Some or pressed on pins you can carefully pry off where the pin goes into the tank bracket.

I think the rivets are only holding the badge plate on. I've not seen a riveted logo plate?

Most of the time the tank emblems can be carefully pried straight off, try to get behind it with a plastic putty knife, and work both ends a little bit at a time to prevent bending the posts on the back of the emblem that secure it to the tank.

The HONDA badge on a CB750 has 2 pins that are pressed thru 2 holes in the tank. The holes have clips to squeeze around the clips as springs.
I have mounted new badges on my new tank with new clips. Back in the days I used other clips used for cars, a small plastic T-shaped tube making the hole tighter.

Remove the badge with a thin wide and stiff tool pressing inside the badge and carefully bend outwards.
Photo where I press the clip into the tank with help of a fuel petcock bowl.

Still don't know what bike we're talking about :-\

On a 77/78K the tank badges are screwed on. The bar/bracket that they are attached to is spot-welded in a recess in the side of the tank. These brackets can be removed and the spot welds ground flush with a little careful dremel work, leaving no holes in the tank to fill in with weld. The recesses can then be filled and sanded if that's the look the OP is going for.

Hey guys,

Sorry for taking so long get back on here.

The bike is a 1978 CB400T.

The logo was pop-riveted on by the PO with the most hardcore pop-rivets this world has ever seen, possibly originated from Area-51, I'm not 100% sure.

However, they have been removed. This was the first time I had removed them, and yes, there was a plate underneath that they were attached to, not the actual tank itself.

I had a friend help me, well, really, he kind of took over and did it all.

Now to finish sanding, then paint, and attach new Honda Logos :)

Thanks for everything guys

- Tim
