How come I just cannot do it ?
« on: June 21, 2014, 12:29:41 PM »
I have lots of friends who are great guitarists, and each have attempted to show me how to play the instrument, sadly I have frustrated all their best endeavours.

My ambition is simple, I want to play this : Chris Rea - The road to hell (long version CD) HD   I have the voice and the good looks, all that remains to be satisfied is the playing.

But up to now it's like the man said, it's like showing a string of pearls to a baboon.

Am I being too ambitious ? It's bucket list stuff, so am ready to put in some effort !

What kind of guitar skills do you have?

If you just want to strum the chords it is simple enough:

Or here is a tab. I haven't tried it to see if it is accurate:

Join the club,
I have been at it for 50 years this September.
Some days it's like my imagination is directly connected to my hands, while other times there is nothing worthwhile happening.  Most of the time it's the latter.
It may be productive to think about what specifically is making things frustrating. If you can Id that,  one of us may be able to suggest something  to help.

When I was little my mom bought us guitars, and after wasting money on lessons for my older brother I had none, and never knew what to do with mine.

At 20 I had an unfortunate 'windsurfing accident'  which resulted in a deformity at the end of my right index finger. I used it to confirm that I could never play guitar.

An optimistic friend suggested that in fact it would be good therapy for my injury. Then I was asked on a job interview if I played an instrument.

I had many friends who played and who showed me chords, and after a bit of a struggle I was playing tunes from beginning to end.

Learn one chord, then another and another, Learn to change from one chord to another, and next thing you know you're playing knockin' on heaven's door.  There are worse things you can do with your time.

Thanks for the advice lads. I have zero skills at present, and I guess little patience also. I tend to look for instant results. Luckily I'm moving into two months of idle time, so I guess lots of practice is the order of the day.

The neighbours will be pissed off, but I shall politely direct them to the whingeing thread.
