Sprocket carrier seal/bearing retainer different threads?
« on: March 24, 2014, 09:11:35 PM »
Tonight i got around to working on the rear wheel i was gonna do the bearings and seals, I started working on my polished carrier to destroy the threads and wrecking the part. I grabbed a second one. I took it appart to find about 1/3 of the threads chewed and the outside all chewed up and ruined. So i grabbed what i thought was a later DOHC hub to try my luck and found it had a SOHC sprocket carrier?!?!? upon disassemble i found more damaged threads but not enough to trash the part.. but upon looking closer this last bearing retainer has a much coarser thread. I figured it was just a early vs late part or something.

I checked CMSNL and found all the seal/bearing retainers are the same P/N 41231-283-000 and all have a fine thread. At this point i have no idea what it is the only thing i can think of is its early sandcast or something?

anyone have any ideas about this coarse vs fine threaded retainers?

I have the one coarse thread then the two fine thread retainers?

Here are the carriers outside of condition they all appear the same?!?!

Do they all the cush drives have the same amount of offset?

69-76 cushdrives are one thing. But the 77-78 models had the primary sprocket moved outboard 10mm and the cush drive was spaced to match. Maybe that is the difference?

They are all the same with the same offsets, which leads me to believe they are 69-76, the 77-78 don't have the 8 ribs from the stud bosses. the coarse one looks different because someone has painted it along its life

Do the retainers look factory?
Common machine shop practice is the machine a bigger OD thread and make a retainer,  if stuck or in a hurry.
