So I bought my motor tonight and it looks to be mostly there. 2 PO ago had put JB Weld, yes JB Weld on part of the space between the case and head to stop an oil leak. This has got to go. Pics below.

My concerns: Going to have to get a 3 yr bonded minnesota title on it. I would like to just replace the top end gaskets on it to make sure it runs and drives. I dont know how much oil it leaks either.

Do I, replace the gaskets? I've done a top end on a one cylinder CT70, but never on ea four cylinder like that. (This cam is a LOT bigger than the 70

)

Or throw the cover on, put the bike together and see if it runs, then tear down next winter if everything else works out?

While I am here, what cover am I missing right now underneath where the clutch lever goes?

How much still is necessary to take that head off and replace the gaskets?

I would start by taking off the JB weld first to see what may be hiding under it. That is not usually a major place or big source for major oil leaks. Make sure there is not a crack or chip etc covered up by that stuff.

Is a blow torch the way to go for tje JB Weld?

JB Weld is good to 500 degrees so you may need about 600 to soften it. A torch would do it. Is it a good idea...not sure.... have never done it.

Wonder if a good high quality paint stripper would touch it ?? I have put it on but never tried to remove it. Usually JB Weld dries to a more dark grayish to black color, that stuff on your engine looks to be more of a brown shade ?? May be something else.

Torch worked well. I didnt see any obvious cracks or anything like that. Do I trust the po or do I roll with it right now?

Is all the wiring and everything easily ready to accept the engine, like a simple plug and play or is all that stuff torn off the frame etc.. If it was a no hassle plug and play I think I would be tempted to mount it up and see what I had.
Do you have totally zero history on the engine etc ??

PO said it ran but never saw it run or leak oil. Said the PO before him was the JB Welder.

No nothing is on the bike. Id have to put the motor in, then all wirong tank controls battery ect ect

Sounds like a lot of hassle for a quick check. Just one of those things you need to decide. Who knows maybe something better will come along with a good title and a little better history. Rebuilds always seem to run more than you think and it would be a drag to throw the money into a quickie top end job and find out second gear was shot or the crank was bad.

Sure thing. sounds like I can title it for sure, just would be bonded. Part of me thinks to get a gasket and throw it in. assemble it and if things go to crap I can sell the.covers, cases ect ect and get my money back till I find something else

I did some assembly last night putting on bars forks running wiring, oil tank ect. I am going to spend the 20 on a valve cover gasket and see if I can get it to start up, then I can see whats going on. I already feel like theres all kinds of random parts everywhere.... Basketcase right?

Then one on top one on bottom? Kinda weird but my fork ears are loose on the forks like there is too much space between top and bottom tree

Yes, top and bottom. Sounds like you are missing the rubber mounts for your ears.
