my inner ten year old just #$%* his pants in excitement.  now i just need to pray it comes to my local drive-in, which claims to have the biggest screen in the US.  its big enough to make me happy and this movie seems made for it.  i never get excited about hollywood movies but they found my achilles heel with this one.
damn you hollywood

anyone have modification plans for equipping a 550 with a gatling gun?  i sup[pose i would need to keep a hammer on board, but that could prove multi-useful.  Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat.  thats all i can think of.  rat-tat-tat-tat-tat.  the next bmw that cuts me off will die like the (pre)weimar scum he is.

You mean like "Pearl Harbor?"

I hate movies that are technically incorrect. I'm not an expert on guns/ammo but I've been around them quite a bit. Don't recall ever seeing them bend the air like that. I'm getting tired of over-the-top, computer generated effects.

If I can get over the technical faults, I'll probably like it. I love WWI aircraft. I just hope it's not a crap movie surrounded by big special effects.

This looks good though: http://www.flagsofourfathers.net/

It looked like they had bullet trails (for lack of a better term) when they were shooting. Like when you fire a shot into water - but they did it in the air. Or like the much-copied slo-mo scene in "The Matrix" when Keanu leans way back and you see the bullets go past. Except they did it in real time here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manfred_von_Richthofen

Quote
It is now considered all but certain by historians, doctors, and ballistics experts that Richthofen was killed by an anti-aircraft (AA) machine gunner, as the wound through his body indicated that it had been caused by a bullet moving in an upward motion, providing ample evidence for a shot coming from the ground. Many experts believe that the shot probably came from Sergeant Cedric Popkin of the Australian 24th Machine Gun Company.[1] Popkin is the only ground-based machine gunner known to have fired at Richthofen from the right, immediately before he landed. Many Australian riflemen were also shooting at the Baron at the time, so it is possible that one of them may well have fired the fatal shot.

...those fokkers were flying messerschmidts! (punchline to a joke my dads friend told me when i was 8)   EDIT: i guess you cant end a parenthetical with 8?  i was 8, not totally cool.

on second look, i noticed what you meant, not heat waves but smoke trails.  as an editor, i am hard pressed to come up wth any better ideas for showing bullits in air.  unlike in other action movies, where if they dont hit the target they hit something else and give the viewer a sense of how close to target the shooter is getting and how often they are shooting, the friendly skies only show hits, which is less exciting to watch.  i dont know if bullits smoked back then, and i guess that is what they are counting on.
oh and the engine heat thing was from last nights episode of standoff.  good thing i watched it again.

HOWEVER i did notice a couple things that made me less excited.

the picture of the girl- i will be surprised if we dont see more of her than we want to (aka PH style romance injection)
the friendly german- c'mon he just killed the dude's friend, and just got done running for his life until the dude's gun broke, but then he get's sentimental?! did he see the picture or something?
the soundtrack- that music is just the right kind of sappy to ensure more crap that will piss us off
enemy at the gates managed to have a romantic subplot that remained sub to the plot, why cant any other modern war movie?!?!

wake me up for the dogfights

Yeah, after I watched it again it does look like smoke. I'm pretty sure they didn't use rocket-propelled bullets in those guns, but i could be wrong. I just have a problem with movie-makers inventing stuff so it's more exciting. Or putting love story sub-plots in to draw more viewers. If your story isn't strong enough to stand on it's own merits, then maybe it shouldn't be made.  :-\ I don't want to be too down on this flick without having seen it. I'm just not getting my hopes up for anything phenomenal. I learned my lesson with PH and a few others.

The main difference with the ammunitions mix for fighters is in the use of tracer, avoided for fighters except to mark the end of the belt. On the other hand, only one in twelve rounds is the B-Geschoß.

Lists of historical inaccuracies in this movie are already discussed in detail in my own Luftwaffe forum section at www.antarctic-press.com. We also compared against other movies, including my favorite WWI aviation cinema, the "Blue Max" which also had many obvious historical errors but the story was good.
1969 Honda CB750, two 1970 CB750, two 1972 CB750K2, 1971 CB500, 1975 CB550, 1976 CB400F, 1968 CL450, 1973 CL450, 1974 CB450, 1970 1/2 SL350K1, 1971 SL350K1, 1972 SL350K2, 1972 CL350, 1972 CB350, 1983 CB1000C, 1976 Kawasaki KZ900A4, 1976 KH500A8, 1979 KZ400B, 1983 ZN1300, and so on and so on...

Finally! It's Thanksgiving in Canada and everyone left today at noon to fly home. What to do? Flyboys matinee!

We were the only ones in the theatre! I think it was Thanksgiving dinner time!

Read the reviews and almost universally panned. "Where's the story?" "None of the characters smoke and we all know they did!" "Little gravity or resonance" and "Not authentic".

I agree with them all. An ongoing war has no plot. The fact that none of the characters smoked was unrealistic but I never noticed that. No, the characters did not suffer gravely or appear to be in touch with the horrendous battle that was waged on the ground, because they fought in the air I guess.

However, it is the pinnacle of couple entertainment. Sorry Gordon but the "chick flick" component does get interjected. However, ya' gotta' love Jennifer Decker, a more than acceptable substitute for Kiera Knightley. My lady was therefore favourably impressed.

For the boy, there were wheelbarrows full of action more than acceptable to me as great entertainment. Don't know what calibre bullets they shot, if they bent or not, if the black guy was token or if there were gross inaccuracies. Don't care.

I liked the movie a lot; it was good fun. Thought I got my money's worth and will rent it again when it is on DVD. I do feel that the dogfights were amazing on the big screen and will loose a lot when transferred to the little screen (I still have one of those).

I note that no one has commented on seeing this. Did anyone actually go and see it?
Time is short!

Oh its the nitpicky stuff no one would notice. Like control surface position for phase of flight.

At one point in the movie you will see a tri-fokker in a steep left hand banked turn.......with the rudder deflected full left. Yeah right like that works.

Some folks have commented on the bullet trails...tracer rounds....I found them to be rather realistic compared to footage of that era and that of WWII.

Loading of the link varied pilot to pilot as is discussed in the movie. Some prefered more tracer / incendiairy...some less.

Generally the excellent marksman prefered less...why let them know your there.

Laughed at the part where he bangs on the breach mechanism with a hammer.....banging on the cocking mechanism would have been mouch more fruitful. Provided he didn't rip the rim off the cartridge.
