Sonic cleaning of carbs
« on: April 07, 2014, 05:58:06 AM »
Hi Guys
Just bought a sonic cleaner to clean carbs and other assorted parts and after doing a search it seems there are a few on here using them with success.  What are you guys using as a cleaning agent in the water.

I saw one post where Pine Sol was used anything else that does a good job?

Gary

My best experience came with a diluted mixture of Simple Green (the aluminum safe formula) and water.

It doesn't matter much. It's the cavitation that does it. The old stuff your grandma washed dishes with will do perfectly. BTW, why are you all so keen on ultrasonic cleaning? Aren't the jets the smallest passages? You can take them out and clean them manually.

i am looking at both units from harbor freight, the lil one for 40 and the big one for 80.  i know some of us have bought from harbor, who has which unit, and will it hold all 4 carb bodies, or just one at a time?   how long does a cleaning cycle typically take?

You're not entirely correct, they work hand in hand. You get better faster results with a good quality cleaning solution than with a #$%* one. People are keen on it due to it working great when you have it running properly, I always find people slag on it when they half assedly use an ultra sonic or buy a $40 on and expect it to perform miracles. Not all ultrasonic cleaners are created equally, you get what you pay for and if you want a strong one expect to pay more than $100. I've been using them at work for almost 14years, there's $40 one and there's $1400 units. All have an intended use.

I repeat: it is the cavitation that does the trick. Whatever you use as a detergent is simply to embody the dirtparticles so they won't attach again. The garages I know use water with a bit of dishwashers detergent but ofcourse you are free to use whatever you want.
