Darn!! Discontinued parts!!
« on: September 12, 2006, 05:56:37 AM »
Man, I just went to order a bunch of parts for my '77 550K, and the starter motor cover gasket, the points cover gasket, and the speedo drive gear used for the dual disc conversion are all discontinued!  What gives!?  I'm used to Honda having awesome parts support!  Plus, I imagine a bunch of different models used those parts..  Is this just natural?  Or is Honda scaling back?

You can always make your own gasket with gasket paper. That's not a big deal.

The points cover definitely is.

Huh- the old one looked to be of paper- Yikes!  Good thing I haven't gotten caught in the rain yet!  I'm gonna go to my local dealerships today and see if they have any stuff in stock.  Otherwise, I'll make my own gasket.  Isn't there two thicknesses of cork "make-a-gasket" commonly sold?  If so, what thickness do I want?  As for the starter motor cover, it appears to be made of rubber- hardened by age of course.  Will soaking the old gasket in a pan of oil soften it up and make it pliable again?  Is this just wishful thinking?  I guess I could try to take an old innertube and make a new rubber gasket for the starter cover- or maybe cork would work well.

I went looking for gaskets for a 175 Kawasaki and found that my local autoparts store had a wide variety of gasket material, in this part of Ontario it was Ideal Supply, and I would imagine that any parts store any where would be the same.

The cork for the timing cover doesn't have to be thick as you tighten the cover onto it.

1mm should do.

Try Classic Motorcycle Supplies in the Netherlands (http://www.cmsnl.com/) or Yamiya in Japan (http://www.yamiya750.com/).

I've noticed the cork gasket on my points cover is getting pretty well compressed and seems quite delicate. I'm thinking I might try cutting one out of a thin sheet of neoprene as TwoTired once suggested.

Bottom end set for a 550 is £10 from Dave Silver (plus shipping) and has all the gaskets and "O" rings, The speedo drive plate was obsoleted in 72 when it was updated but you can easily modify the present one, if you want a picture email me direct
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

www.westernhillshonda.com has the bottom and top end gasket kits (Honda OEM - not Versah or Athena or whatever).  Bottom is $21, top $56 I think.  I've ordered one of each for my 550F.  Will include everything you need and frankly is a lot less expensive than buying one at a time.
