'77 CB550F Cylinder Stud Torque Question Upon Reassembly
« on: March 29, 2014, 02:31:37 PM »
Hi Guys,

I just finished cleaning out the 8mm Cylinder Stud Threads on the upper case and I am ready to put the studs back on the engine.

My plan is to use a bit of Copper Anti-seize on the male threads.  Also the studs are original to the bike and have been cleaned and polished.  I have also run their threads through a 8X1.25mm Die to make sure the threads are smooth and clean.

I cannot find instructions in the Clymer - what torque should I use, and is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks!

The Honda shop manual says "Tighten the twelve 8 mm nuts uniformly to a torque of 2.0-2.2 kg-m (14.46-16.63ft-lbs). " The tightening sequence starts with rear left center stud, then front right center stud, back to the rear right center stud, and so on continuing outward.

Paul,

Thanks for that, but I was looking for the Stud Torque Value.

Haha, sorry about that,  :-[ Guess I wasn't paying attention. I don't think that I've ever seen any "spec" for the studs. I'm pretty sure that they are not to be removed, just like some of the carb jets. ;)

Weird,

That might be the answer.  I have them at 17 FTLB's, I think I will them there.  I get a nice ringing when I strike them with a wrench, like a tuning fork.  Its how they sounded when I was PB Blasting them before taking them out.
