Cb550 / 750 oil filter relocation
« on: May 27, 2013, 04:31:21 PM »
CycleX sells a block off plate and spin on oil filter relocation kit. Most of their parts are for a 750 which is their usual answer whenever I try to ask about interchangeability.

I was looking at bike bandit for the exploded view and I see that the part number is the same for the oil filter cover on the 74 550 and 74 750.. Is this correct, and if so can I run the cyclex filter relocation kit??

I know someone here is way smarter than me and you guys know a ton more about these motors than I do. This 74 550 is my first sohc Honda and I'm collecting parts for a rigid build for when I can afford a frame from cycle one manufacturing.

Thanks guys! I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions add I get into tearing the bike down and gritting into the motor. Sorry in advance !

You can look up your parts here:

If you post dimensions of your 550 filter cover, I can measure my 750 and let you know.

Yes, the spin on coversion for the 750 is compatible with the 550.

For better info than CycleX is apparently willing to provide, see the Randakk's kit here: http://randakks.com/collections/filters/products/honda-gl1000-gl1100-gl1200-cbx-dohc-4-cx500-and-variants-engine-parts

I have this on my GL1000. It took longer to remove the existing cover than it did to install the adapter and new spin on filter.

I have every intention of making this conversion to my 550.

That kit doesn't seem to allow for the oil filter to be relocated farther back on the frame, which is what I'm looking for to make it easier to get at once motor is inn its new frame.

Awesome, the part numbers are identical between the 550/750 on that site too. Looks like it'll work!! Thanks

Sorry, I misunderstood your plan, although looking at the Randakk kit still confirms that the CB750 and CB550 have the same size filter housing, so the adapters are compatible.

Does the frame you are thinking about have a single downtube that would block the stock filter?

No, it will have dual downtubes. However the exhaust I have planned to design may cause clearance issues. I want to have the option, at least, of running the filter back on the frame in a custom bracket somewhere kind of like some hardtail harleys where they run it back by the rear wheel.
