550 top speed rpm & A/F ratio questions
« on: March 29, 2014, 07:31:29 PM »
Hey guys, I've finally been getting acquainted to my 550 and had a couple questions. It was a barn found 75 550F that needed everything replaced or rebuilt. Lately I've been commuting on it and I'm surprised at how well it performs on the freeway.. I was a bit worried at first.

My first obvious question is about the top speed. It seems to have no problem getting to 90 without full throttle, but I'm scared to go any further because I don't trust the aftermarket tach is telling the truth. I thought a factory 550 topped out just over 100 mph? Where are the rpm's when it's topped out? Will I run out of rpms before the engine runs out of power, or is it "safe" to just crank it up until it stops accelerating? I wanna see what this old girl is capable of.

2nd question: I have the bike setup with a UNI foam filter and mac 4-1 header w/ Cone Eng. open muffler. Solid 2.25" all the way through, no baffle. Factory jets, and I haven't touched the a/f screws. From what I've read this should make it lean, correct? The carbs are balanced and it runs GREAT as is. Occasional pops from the exhaust on deceleration, but overall seems great to me. Although this is my first sohc4 and have nothing to compare it to. Is this a dangerous setup? Should I adjust the a/f screws to somewhat compensate? The bike doesn't seem to overheat, but the weather hasn't gotten hot yet.

Thanks guys, hoping to get a more experienced opinion so I don't melt the engine of my new baby.
