CB350F muffler recommendations.
« on: March 31, 2014, 12:24:43 AM »
I am in the market for some new mufflers for my Honda CB350F. I currently have a 4 into 4 setup with headers and some straight pipes that I assume the previous owner welded onto them (which were initially wrapped in heat tape when I purchased the bike). What I would like to do, ideally, is cut the pipes at the weld and install new mufflers onto them, maintaining the 4 into 4 setup.

I've been looking at Dime City's catalog and specifically at the 16" Reverse Cone Megaphone Muffler (No Baffle): http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-exhaust-parts-26-inch-reverse-cone-megaphone-muffler-80-84029.html

and the 18" Trumpet Style Muffler: http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-exhaust-parts-19-inch-trumpet-style-muffler-80-84010.html

Something along those general lines aesthetically. Would this be do-able?

This is the first time I'll be doing exhaust system work and am looking for some experienced input. I'm including some photos of my current setup and some measurements I took of the individual headers while they were removed from the bike. They are a bit dinged up, in some cases at the weld, but I have access to welding equipment and attaching the mufflers should not be a problem. I am curious/concerned about how they might line up on the bike and whether or not I'll need to create some sort of bracket to attach them to the frame, etc.

The header measurements are:

#1 - 35"
#2 - 33"
#4 - 31.5"
#3 - 34.5"

Looking for input/recommendations. Let me know if I'm missing anything or if there's any more info I should post.
Thanks.

I'm watching....sorry can't help, cause I'm in the same boat.  Those look like someone welded those VW pea shooters on them.

Something I'm considering doing.
If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

This is a common challenge - to find replacement 4-into-4 mufflers for the CB350F.  The original set-up was very fragile and doesn't last long on this model.  Although OEM replicas are now available (e.g. David Silver Spares), they are very pricey and likely will last about the same short time.  I was fortunate to be able to replace mine with about the last batch available from MIVV, which seem to be a much heavier construction.  Although they were still expensive (a little over half the cost of the current OEM replacements), they hopefully will last a lot longer.

Perhaps someone who has done what you contemplate can offer their experience.  It sounds like a good idea and is worthwhile to pursue.  Make sure to document in this forum what you end up doing, even if you encounter some obstacles.

I know you're going for the 4 into 4 but I have some 4-2 mufflers for sale if you're interested.

@HondanutRider Yea, I've been contemplating this for a while now. I don't want to spring for the David Silver Spares system and the MIVV set seem as rare as hen's teeth. I guess the demand just wasn't enough to justify producing more of them? Makes sense, but since I'm looking and using these kinds of forums as sources, it would seem like people want these pipes.

Initially, I was looking for headers too, because my set was wrapped and I assumed that whatever was underneath was probably not usable. But after removing the heat tape and cleaning them up a bit, it got me wondering why I never see anyone on these forums with a 4-4 systems using aftermarket pipes like the ones I linked to. It makes me a bit apprehensive to take the plunge, for fear that there is some reason not to that I'm unaware of. I feel like if it's not one of those two reproduction sets or mint originals than all I really see are 4-1 or 4-2 systems. Frankly, I just like the 4-4 look much better. Doesn't need to be original, for me (though that'd be pretty sweet, if affordable).

With the reverse cones increasing diameter near the end, you're going to have to introduce an upward (and maybe inward) bend into the #1 and #4 pipes on each side so the pipes remain somewhat close to the bike.
Dont forget to take into consideration the added space between the pipes on the left because of the side stand.
If you have fab skills, this might be an easy job, but if this was me, i'd go onto the cone engineering site and look at their muffler accessories to help you with this.  Cone engineering makes these DCC reverse cones.
