FEELER GAUGES!? .002"-.003"
« on: March 31, 2014, 03:28:45 PM »
Hello,

I'm trying to adjust the valve clearance on a cb550 and the feeler gauge you can get from motion pro is not capable of getting into the exhaust at all. I fear the skinny gauge will snap from the bolt and end up in the valve area. I searched everywhere on amazon and elsewhere online and it seems there's nowhere I can get a long/angled single gauge .002 and .003 in the US. There are ones in Asia but nothing I can get shipped to me before the weekend.

What do you guys use? This is really frustrating.

I got mine individually(the 0015. mainly) from a Snap-On guy,but have gotten a few from a good machine shop before, they were the single size long ones and a good deal.
I basically use the standard sets that you buy from auto parts stores and bend them like others here do;you can remove some of the better ones and use them individually for better 'feel'.

I use regular old short ones.  The trick is to put a 35-45 degree bend approximately a half inch from the end.
If it works good, it looks good...

I used the motion pro one no problem. Before that I used a standard set of feeler gauges bent to my liking.

Yep, bending them helps.

I use individual cornflakes of the correct width. If they fall in the engine they will dissolve and cause no problems.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

The dissolving depends on oil  of course ;)

I've had mine for so long, I don't remember where I got them. It is a feeling to work it in there. The other thing you could do though, loosen them up, slip the gauge under, then tighten back down to the right tension and lock it...done.

Have any of you guys used this tappet adjustment tool?

http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/989/17138/Motion-Pro-Tappet-Adjustment-Wrench-Set

It looks sexy and works.  I bought a cheaper version from another source.  I think CB750 Supply or somewhere like that.  I used it one time and went back to my old stubby offset 10mm wrench (old Yamaha tool) and my stubby screwdriver.....but to each their own!!!  I might become more proficient at it if I would try to develop the technique and feel with the new tool like I have with the old.

Do you still need feeler gauge for it?  Or does it work by itself?

You still need feeler gauges on my version.  I don't know how it would work without them.  Mine basically combines the wrench and screwdriver into one with indexed reference marks on the top so you can visually see how much you are loosening or tightening the tappet screw.

The double-ended angled ones from MP work great.
First be sure you have the crank positioned correctly.
Second, make sure you are checking the correct valves.  You should be able to detect the gap by hand.

Try wilcodirect.co.uk
I don't know if they ship to the US but they do the 'offset gauges' off the shelf, it's where I got mine.

Go/no go type works good too, where the very end portion of the blade (tip)
is one thousandth inch thinner than the rest of the blade. .002/.003 as an example.
.002 tip slides under exhaust tappet, but lightly "snags" as blade thickness changes
to thicker .003 portion, indicating correct clearance for that valve. They're a little pricey, when you find em, but work nicely.
