Sealing Grease on Air Filter
« on: April 01, 2014, 02:10:33 PM »
Have a new K&N air filter for my 750K5. In reading about this on the forum archives (and not to start a debate on paper vs. K&N), member Ofreen says using sealing grease when installing the filter is important.

Question is, is this grease applied to the top and bottom of the filter where it contacts the air box? And any particular grease to use? Light or liberal application? Should grease be used regardless of paper of KN filter type?

Thanks.

Interesting I too have a new in the box K&N that came with the bike I don't see any reason for the grease other than keeping it from sticking when removing for cleaning."  using sealing grease " Is he implying there will be a leak with out it? Has anyone used grease with the stock filter? I do use oil on my oil filter gasket but never used any thing on my air filter. Popwood I will hold off putting mine on until I get a answer if you find out any thing please post it and I will too.

what are you guys saying? you are supposed to put oil on your air filter, thats what helps it trap particulate matter.  Just get a can of the K&N oil and spray it on very liberally and let it soak through the filter element then install it back on the bike.

Airborne 82nd,

I found K&N has an air filter sealing grease product that is high heat resistant and helps insure an air-tight seal where the filter seats in the airbox. I'd assume the principal of only letting air into the engine that passes through the filter would apply to most filters. The product description cautions its not to be used on "clamp-on" type filters. Hopefully some other members will provide more experienced information.

nccb,

I know about the filter media oil, which, by the way, should not be sprayed on "liberally" according several experienced forum members. Too much oil will impede performance and foul spark plugs. As recommended here, I washed my new one as they are sometimes over oiled from the factory. Advise is to spray lightly, let it penetrate, migrate into the medium until it is a light pink color. Please see my post about what I've learned about the sealing grease product above.

lol sorry, I confused the definitions in my head. thanks for pointing that out.  Thought you were describing the oil as sealing grease as I had never heard of it before.

Yea I have the oil kit but have never heard of the grease it seems to me if the fit was off enough to need grease it would get sucked in when you fired it up. I can see putting a light coat to keep it from sticking to the cover from heat and time and maybe tearing the filter

KN's have a close cell foam on their sealing surfaces, Should be no need for grease unless you have some severely warped or misshapen air box halves. At least the 3 different KN's I have in various stock air boxes all seal just fine without any grease.

Are you sure you really need it? If KN recommends then maybe so. I know Uni recommended it for the application on my XR650L so I bought a tub of it. It's damned thick.
