CB750K3 Fork Oil Refill Question
« on: April 28, 2014, 09:29:09 AM »
Quick question: I'm finishing up a front-end rebuild (at least that's what I'm calling it) and am ready to refill the oil in my forks.  The components are completely dry, reassembled (minus the caps) and mounted in the tree.  I seem to recall reading somewhere that the caps should be put back on the fork tubes with springs as compressed as possible (i.e. with someone putting as much weight as possible on the front end of the bike, obviously with the wheel on).

Is this true / advisable?

How should I accomplish this if the bars obstruct the caps??

I've also seen conflicting information about fill levels (manual-specified volume vs. visible fill level) - what do you guys recommend for a dry refill?

Thanks!

You will have to remove the bars if they block the caps.

I fill using a plastic measuring cup, but for a fairly reasonable amount Cycle Gear sells a syringe style filler for fork oil. Since it is dry now using the measuring cup will ensure you have the same amount in both sides. If you do wet fills in the future then using something as a dip stick is worth while.

I would think compressing the fork would make it harder to install the caps since the spring is forced up. With my Wing and my 550 I did the opposite. Left it on th center stand and sat on it to leep the front wheel off the ground and the legs extended. Even with that you will need to press the caps down to get them to engage the threads.

You will find it extremely difficult to put the caps back on while trying to compress the forks. No need at all to weigh down the front end.

You can do it with the bars on, make sure you have 1" of preload or so and make sure your front wheel is off the ground. I've even gotten the caps on even without the wheel off the ground, just muscled the bike on to the side stand.

Thanks for the info.  I'll put even amounts of oil in each tube and replace the caps without any excess pressure.

Double check your manual but I believe it's 220cc for the level.

You get progressive springs or going back with stock?

I didn't replace the springs, though I'd like to eventually.  I need to do a bit more homework on progressives...
