oil tank fittings
« on: April 03, 2014, 07:05:07 am »
not directly sohc 4 but is there a better place to ask? :)

building the oil tank for the supermono and need a source for metric fittings to connect it. preferably in europe / UK for tax shipping costs.

also some advice on size.... most likely will weld cylindrical bungs with thread to the tank so need to know diameter. shall i plan M14 thread then?

And yes, gonna have some thermal insulation on top, last thing i want are well done family jewels!

You may want to run AN fittings, easy to run braided lines.
 Steel tank, or aluminum?
If Aluminum, get weld on bungs. Cutting the thread off a fitting forged from 7075, can be VERY messy to weld.

+1 on weld on aluminum bungs & AN fittings.  Aeroquip or Earl's should be readily available, and can supply the bungs, fittings & hose.  You'll also need to include a breather for the tank that goes to a catch tank.  AN6 would be a minumum hose size, AN8 likely better for a racing application.

ally tank, and yep, welded on bungs for Dash 8 hose or some sort of metric equal.... but was thinking metric cause i am in italy and most likely the guy that does my tubes/crimping will have metric tubing. So anybody this side of the pond has links to shops?
Not a big fan of SS braided (unless for brakes), all my oil-air GSXRs have the stock fabric braided hoses under pressure and they never failed even after 25 years :)
it's quite a convoluted way from motor to the rear mount tank, so I want the extra flexibility of fabric braid.

it's a low pressure application anyway. one side is negative pressure, the other expels to atmospher  pressure.

while at it, what do you guys use for a filling plug? M22 should do i'd think...

I made some bungs that take a tappet cover.

Here's the link for Aeroquip in Italy TG - http://www.moeller.it/

They do have a 'fabric' covered hose, Startlite that I used on my 550.  It's more flexable than the SS wrapped.  As for a 'filling' plug, why not just use a threaded cap, and bung.  Alternative Aeroquip has large size plugs with an o-ring seal, just need to safety wire.
