New to this hobby or is it an addiction? ....1st days
« on: April 02, 2014, 06:45:42 PM »
Started today on this project....1980 cb650c..40000km....complete very little rust no PO butchery....been reading this forum for tips and today did the carbs ..soaked in simple green purple...amazing stuff ,who would have thought that much crud in a clean looking carb set...pulled apart all connectors ..contact cleaner ,dilectic grease, seafoam, fired up but has backfiring, popping, but got better with time.
A little valve train clatter, but a leaking head gasket #1 & 2...so head gasket  looks to be in order

Any recommendations for vendors or brands..do all gasket kits contain everything?....will get a manual or use online ones....should rings be done and hone cylinders valve seals should get replaced?.....anything else you think should be done...

Will post pictures later...did not realize this bike could rev so high..still have not decided what to do with bike..can't afford a restoration, I don't think its a good return on money ..but cafe, bobber or combo intrigues me..lots of good looking bikes out there
Sorry for long post but being a newbie, it happens
Thanks for any info and help

Welcome,
It's a hobby when you buy it, it's a bicth when you work on it, it's your heart and soul when you ride it, and it's an addiction  when you are looking for a second one. Careful brother , many a good man has gone down that path before you.
Gaskets, I like a Vesarah complete gasket set, most of what you'll need is in there but it really isn't a complete (every gasket and seal) set. but for what you'll be doing, it should work fine.
40 k engine, while you are there already, it probably would be a good idea to freshen up the rings and hone it .
How ugly is this bike that it doesn't deserve pictures?
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.
550 Snowbike -Somebody had to do it.

It's a hobby when you buy it, it's a #$%* when you work on it, it's your heart and soul when you ride it, and it's an addiction  when you are looking for a second one.

Or a third one, or a fourth one . . . .  Very true words.

Yes I lost count.   Try the 650 site also.  Think there is a couple members there from up north too.
18 grand and 18 miles dont make you a biker

Really not sure about destroying this...saw a fine example on adv site that intrigued me .....just rejuvenated...ordered a gasket set (A) from Honda dealer...part 061a1-426-s02 for $102.... They showed me site...ronniesmail order.com....never heard of that one...so this weekend will try to find out why no park lights front and rear and no turn signals....thinking switch and ground problems...I was pleasantly surprised at how nice this runs...
Thanks for replies
