Trying to reinstall exhaust after Oil pan change
« on: April 01, 2014, 11:46:05 PM »
I removed the exhaust (4-1) from my '78 CB750F to install a new oil pan. Got the pan on no problem. Put in new exhaust crush gaskets. However, now i cant seem to get the exhaust back on.  The problem is trying to get all 4 pipes lined up to the exhaust ports correctly at the same time. I've been at it for 2 nights trying everything I could think of.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks for getting everything lined up and held in place well enough to get the bolts on?

If the exhaust seperates, put the headers on as a loose fit first then deal with the muffler. When it's all lined up tighten her up.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Use blocks of wood to hold up the back part of the exhaust at the proper level.
An extra hand or two is a huge help.

Thanks guys. I took one of the 2 "removable" headers off after soaking it overnight in WD40 and it was much easier to install with just 3. I tried to take off the cone part of the exhaust but it is rusted in place and didnt want to strong arm it too much in case it disintegrated. At some stage I'll have to spring for a new exhaust but its up and running again for a while.

I use strong string and tie each one up loose to the rear strut up by the top of the shock or turn signals holds all of them in place while I work the headers in place then tighten from front to back.
