Drying gas tank after derusting
« on: April 03, 2014, 08:03:24 PM »
Been soaking my tank with evaporust, seems to be working well so far. Final step is to rinse with water, plan on using it asap. My question is what's the best way to dry it out?

I was thinking about just sticking a blow dryer into it but would it flash rust before I get a chance to fill it with gas?

Rinse it with methanol (gas line antifreeze) , it absorbs water and evaporates very quickly with compressed air.

Djfob,
I've lined a few tanks and we used a low pressure, high volume air pump;it's been a while so I can't remember the brand.I stuck the hose in the tank and let it sit like that around 24 hrs. to completely dry out those tanks,it was required for the liner to stick well to the inside of the tanks to Completely Dry every inch of the inside. The problem was I couldn't see in there so better safe than sorry and I just left that air pump on for a long time...more if it was humid.

Would Rubbing Alcohol work also ?

I have used a hair dryer in the past to dry out the tank, right down the filler neck.  another thing i have been doing is spraying in WD40 next to a compressed air blow gun to mist the tank thus stopping rust.

I've used alcohol and then a hair dryer. I didn't even blow it up. Then gas with 2 stroke oil.

Doesn't look like I can get denatured alcohol here in Canada. Though methanol ( methyl hydrate ) can be acquired easily.I'll go this route with compressed .

I've seen 2 stroke oil/fuel mix mentioned a few times from my google searches. Would it still be recommended even if I plan on using the tank right away?

This might be a good or bad way, I dont really know, but I think petrol and then inhouse ventilation works fine.

Make sure your tank is room temperature. Wash with water, pour it out and directly fill a liter of petrol in the tank. Wash it around, pour it in a container and repeat one more time.

Then put your tank by a ventilation-OUTLET from your building and let it lie there for a few days.

Its what i did and it worked perfectly :-)

Methyl hydrate works fine, I use it as my last step to flush out left over rinse water and follow up with compressed air till dry. Gas if I'm using it right away or 2stroke oil if its going to sit empty for a bit.

Just go to Canadian Tire or Rona, you can buy Methyl Hydrate in 1 liter and 4 liter, it's also great for cleaning paint, grease etc. off of paint. I'm sure you know but it is highly flamable so be aware of ignition sources.

I have a Craftsman shop vac that also blows in reverse for use as a blower that dries out tanks very quickly with "165" mph wind. Even when dried a preservative is wise unless loaded with gasoline right away.

After it is dry I use fogging oil from the pressure washer section at HD or Lowes. with the tank upside down it covers the best every nook & cranny. Be carful what you use to dry depending on paint.

Just did the tank cleanse and installed POR-15 liner. I dumped a whole quart of Acetone in once I drained as much water as I could out, setup a hairdryer to blow hot air in the filler whole. 20 minutes later, bone dry.

I'm about to use acetone to remove an old liner and then Evaporust to de rust the tank.

The tank will sit for a month or two without gas in it as I want to sandblast the exterior and paint it.

Any suggestions on how to prevent flash rust long term?  I'm hesitant to recoat it, especially given it's an F tank with a recessed fuel filler.

Think I would strip/ blast whatever the outside first then clean the inside incase grit etc gets inside. Also check carefully for pin holes etc on the bottom as that may have been part of the reason for the liner.

I don't think I would sand blast it. try the spray paint remover from Home Desperate. Works like a charm even on the flake layer.

I used my wife's haridryer. She wasn't too happy when I burned it out drying a tank. I'm sure you can get a really cheap one at the thrift store. They do work.

acetone...then hit it with redkote once it's been dry for 24 hours...let redkote cure for another 72 or so hours.

Never worry about rust again.  With ethanol fuel water is always a possibility.

Im not sure if you've read the back of the evapo rust but it says that if you want to let it dry without the rust effect, you have to rinse with evaporust. This means using clean evaporust for rinsing the inside of your tank.

Btw, did you happen to find a cheap place, aside from crappy tire, to get evaporust?

I read that but wanted it completely dry before I added gas to it.
Crappy tire now carries metal rescue for $25/gallon. Wish they had this when I needed it, would have saved quite a few pennies.

you can completely dry it too. It might take awhile.
