cb500 carbs-broke something
« on: September 13, 2006, 05:52:17 AM »
The throttle slides on the CB500 I picked up were frozen in place, so I took the carbs off the bike to clean and inspect.  Looks like the fuel line was routed wrong, and was binding between carb 1 & 2.  While I had them off, figured they should be cleaned.  Found a small mouse nest, with only a few droppings actually inside one of the carb bodies.  Here's where it gets weird though.  There's a 13mm nut as part of the linkage on each carb.  Nut #2 was very stubborn.  Blah blah, then SNAP!  I broke one end clean off.  (Had to put what was left in the vise to loosen that nut.)  I found the end that broke off, so my question is, will JB Weld hold this on?  See pictures below.  Thanks!

I wouldn't trust anything to hold that together. When it breaks again, you will have two slides disconnected from the throttle control... not good at all.
I think you need a replacement piece. Probably any Keihin carb rack with the same basic linkage system will have the same exact part.
I hope you have lots of pictures or drawings to show you how to put that shaft together again, the 2 lift arms need to be at a fairly precise and equal angle to the cable wheel.

Hi Bodi.  I was hoping not to have to get the new part.  I haven't taken this assembly apart yet, but will get lots of pics if it comes to that.  Thanks.

John.

I'll tear it down this weekend.  Having an extra can't hurt.
