Slow Jet (Pilot Jet) Removal - Pressed In Type
« on: July 13, 2006, 08:26:00 AM »
I have a 1978 CB-750A with Keihn #24 Carbs. The pilot jets are pressed in and I need a good way to remove them without damaging the carb bodies themselves. I have found and ordered a new set of #38 pilot jets (stock for this model and year). I have been told that heat with a small torch and use an "easy out" threaded tool and the underlying threads should not be damaged. Then put some blue locktight on the new jets and thread them in. Does that sound about right? Are there other methods any one has used with success? TIA

These jets are NOT screwed in they are a "push" fit you have to grip tightly BUT carefully with "vice grips" and then pull and twist at the same time. Clean thouroughly and rfit with a light tap. Screw in jets WILL NOT FIT
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Well technically screw jets would fit. been done before, HOWEVER, you have to remove your old ones then tap the ports while making sure you got the right thread and that the tap and your jets are not too big as you only get one shot at this before you break the seat. Gee once you look at it this way, stick with your press in jets.

Pull them out, clean them, put them back in. The slows work just fine even with an 836 kit. We have accel pumps after all!

Thanks for the advice. I forgot to put in one vital piece of information. He guy who owned my bike before me DRILLED out the slow jets which is now the problem. It runs too rich - and fouls the plugs. They are a dark sooty color and that is the only change from stock. So I'm sure that's the problem. NOW, what I have to do is try to get the old ones out - which doesn't sound like that will be a big problem - and then put in a new set so that everything is back within specs.

Well that makes things different. Try to get originals or exact replacements....if you can.

Otherwise try to contact buffo by pm or something. He has installed screw in jets in his 78. He might be able to tell you what brand he got and the tap size and maybe the thread.

Sounds like more advice from motorcyclecarbs.com.

I'm not saying it's bad advice, but from what I've read this past month here on the forum it sounds pretty easy to remove the press-in jets.

If this is the case, I can't figure out why this guy is selling us on the idea of pulling the jet with an "easy out", then loctiting the screw-in jet in place.   ::) ::) ::)

When I talked to him about it, he told me that tapping wasn't necessary.  By his estimation, the major diameter of the thread is about the same size as the hole in the carb body, so you can fill the voids and hold it in place with blue loctite.

That should work in a pinch, but if the original press-ins are available why not use them?

That said, I let him talk me into trying the screw jets  :o :o ???

Haven't tried them yet, but it don't look right I'm sending them back.

out,

Zeke

Not to mention whether or not locktite will hold up to gas in the long run...

I'm sure your jetting would get pretty screwy if your slows fell out into the bowls  ;D

regarding the idea of using screw-in slow jets w/blue loctite for a 77-78 - has anyone actually done this with any success?
i'm almost in desperation mode and need a solution.  one of my press-in slow jets is clogged like a mutha.

(i also just called motorcyclecarbs.com - he suggested same thing, only he told me to get #N424-24...not N424-22.
is this right??  the stock part is -22)

He can get them out. It is that one of them is severely plugged.
