ebay sellers ship to US only!
« on: September 13, 2006, 12:40:51 PM »
From time to time I find something on ebay that the seller refuses to ship to Canada. It is not a difficult process but if they don't want to there is nothing I can do about it.

Is there anyone that would be willing to remail the occasional item to me? I live in Calgary Alberta and would of course pay all expenses.

It would require the completion of a customs form declaring the fact it is a Japanese motorcyle part and its approx value.

Thanks,
Marty

I don't get it either ???. I've shipped parts to people all over the world including many on this site. The only thing I'd say is don't use UPS for international shipment. It only takes a minute to fill out the customs form...I have them on hand so it's done before I get to the post office.

Hi. I feel your pain eh?. Sometimes sellers will only ship UPS and they charge 30.00 to do the customs paperwork as opposed to Canada Post who  charge 5.00 on anything over 20.00 US so unless its an expensive item you get killed percentage wise. What are you looking for? I have a few spares. John. Timmins. cb750k5

Try "damaged motorcycle part - no value". I recently USPS mailed a Sturgis T-Shirt to Edmonton from Colorado. Told the lady at the post office it was a T Shirt with a value of $5. Postage was $3 something. That easy. No problems. Forget UPS !!! They are a business after money. The USPS is government. What the hell do they know?!

I'd love to help you out mate, but the shipping would be awful! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I've mentioned this before. It's easier to get forgiveness than permission, so if you want something, bid on it and win the auction, even if the seller doesn't specify he will sell abroad. If you have a good feedback he will probably send you an invoice with the right quote. You pay it quick and have a satisfied seller who won't refuse to sell abroad anymore.

Actually, I believe many of them say "only to US" because it's easier than "No problem with Sweden, Germany, UK, but won't sell to Nigeria, Colombia, Costa Rica, Thailand etc". If you are from Canada you are half-US citizen -won't say half american because Canadians are as americans are US citizens-

I'll bite Raul ;D  of course you are correct if you are looking at a map of North America, but there is a small subtlety the Spanish-English dictionary might not have - in North America, in common usage the word 'American" is applied exclusively to  inhabitants of the United States. The rest of us are Mexicans, Canadians etc.

I've found that most "US Only" eBay sellers will ship to Canada if you ask in advance...there are a few hardcore USA Only types, but if you have a Verified PayPal account and spotless Feedback, they'll usually ship to you.

I actually prefer UPS to the USPS in some cases....I'm on the east coast of Canada and lots of sellers in the USA with bike parts are out west...the USPS takes 6-12 weeks from out there, so the extra $25 bux is small potatoes if you get what you need quickly, in my book.

I have quite a few friends that ship stuff up to me from stateside. There are quite a few sellers in the states that have had bad shipping experiences sending into Canada and they don't want to bother. Others say its too much paperwork. So try to locate a friend that doesn't mind ricocheting parcels to you. And please be careful of stamping everything as a present. in an attempt to avoid customs and excise. Canada Customs has long ago caught onto that one and they do spot checks quite frequently. And they will fine and/or prosecute these days.

Then you get into the hazardous materiels. I will not bore you of the tale trying to get paint from Dondirtbiker from him to me. Suffice to say there were 5 people and three months involved. And Don and I were not part of those 5 people.

I usually whine and snivel at the seller, and most will ship here.

But I've had a couple of sellers who have a pole up their a$$&s about the politics of the Middle East thing, and the fact that our leaders didn't jump in straight away to help the US. They said that they wouldn't do business with anyone who was a 'US hater'.

Oh well, time to look somewhere else then...

Dave 76 SS and El Huero Loco and Terry, thanks for your offers and I will be taking you up on them in the future.

I am not too interested fooling around with sellers that clearly indicate "Available to United States Only". Why mess with their auction? I'm the kind of person that just rigs a work around. Also, I don't have the time to sit on ebay and often will come across something that ends in two hours.

I would not indicate on a customs form anything but the actual contents and actual approximate value. Why risk the agro for no real gain. In particular, used or new "Japanese" motorcycle parts are duty free and all that remains is the GST (sales tax). I agree Old 76cr, USPS is the only way to go.

Old 76cr, I am not looking for anything in particular. I have a 78 550K and a 78 CB750F and it is just that if a part comes up that would be handy to have as a spare, I bid on it. For instance, I am watching some fuel tanks, a wiring harness, a seat and a kick starter/shifter. If the price is right, I jump in. However, if I have a specific need, I'll drop you a note.

Terry, thanks a lot. I'll run the "Sells to Australia only" through you!

Thanks to you all,

Marty

Some sellers just say to which countries they want to sell, but some others expressly set up restrictions for bidders not meeting certain criteria, like number of votes, or country of origin. When I'm refused, then I move along, but if my bid is accepted, I go on. Even if I don't win I'm doing the seller a favour jacking up the price, so I don't understand why sellers would restrict anybody from bidding.

ahaha - whatever - that's like saying you are half Italian, Raul...

Now I'm confused. Had to search in my Websters dictionary and this is what I found:

America.- 1. United States. 2. North America. 3. South America 4.Also called The Americas. North and South America considered together.

And to this I say WTF??? How come a country grants itself the right to use the name of the whole continent? What if China starts to name itself Asia? Furthermore, what happens with Central America? Aren't mexicans americans then? If not, what the heck are they apart from cheap labor?

And then I searched for "American". The answer:

American.- adj. of or pertaining to the United States of America or its inhabitants. 2. Of or pertaining to North or South America, or the Western Hemisphere (does this include Asia?) 3. A citizen of the USA. 4. A native or inhabitant of the Western Hemisphere.

Seems to me that there is some confussion between the part and the whole. A texan is a US citizen, but it doesn't mean that every US citizen is texan. US is in America, but it doesn't mean that America is US. I'm no italian because Italy and Spain are different countries, but I am as european as an italian, a polish, a german or a dutch.

Then, what about Hawaii? A hawaiian is a US citizen, but it's not an american strictly speaking. A canadian is more american than a hawaiian, geographically speaking. Don't forget that CONTINENTS are GEOGRAPHY, while COUNTRIES are POLITICS. Guinea was a spanish protectorate for a long time, and therefore guineans were spanish citizens with the same rights, but they weren't spaniards nor europeans; they were guineans and africans, but spanish citizens at the same time.

A few pages ahead in the Webster dictionary I found the meaning of the word "Asia"

Asia: A continent bounded by Europe and the Artic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. 3.600,000,000; ab, 16,000,000 sq. mi

Now this is getting interesting. Let's search for Africa.

Africa: A continent S of Europe and between the Atlantic and Indian oceans. 760,000,000 ab, 11,700,000 sq. mi.

What about Europe?

Europe: A continent in the W part of the landmass lying between the Atlantica and Pacific oceans, separated from Asia by the Ural Mountains on the E and the Caucasus Mountains and the Black and Caspian seas on the SE. In British usage, Europe sometimes contrasts with England (WTF?) xxxxxxx ab xxxx sq. mi.

And what about the rest?

Oceania: The island of the central and S Pacific, including Polinesa, Micronesia, Melanesia and usu. Australasia.

Australia: A continent, SE of Asia, between the indian and pacific ocean.

Australasia: Australia, New Zealand and neighbouring islands in the S PAcific ocean.

Antarctica: The continent surrounding the South Pole, almost entirely covered by an ice sheet.

But then, what's the definition of "continent"?

Continent: One of the main landmasses of the globe, usu. reckoned as seven in number (Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia and Antarctica)

OK, so then let's search for "North America"

North America: The northern continent of the Western Hemisphere, extending from Central America to the Arctic Ocean.  xxxx ab xxx squ. mi.

When I studied, there was no "North America" continent or "South America" Continent. There was just "America" continent, divided between North, South and Central. So I guess the confussion comes because the word "american" doesn't have the geographical meaning it has here, but a political meaning.

00:20, time to go to bed...

No worries mate, but most of the bike parts for sale in Oz (with the exception of my stuff of course) is #$%* anyway, so I'm not expecting to be overrun with parcels for you, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
