Problem with David Silver Spares master cylinder rebuild kit
« on: April 04, 2014, 05:37:30 AM »
So, I ordered the non-OEM kit to rebuild the master cylinder on my 350/4.  I had two issues.  The washer is too big (both inside & outside diameter) & the circlip is too big (it won't fit even when fully compressed).  In this photo the kit parts are on the left, the originals on the right.

I sent an email to explain this.  They replied & asked for photos.  What gets my goat is part of their email where "Jason" wrote "Sorry to hear of this problem but we sell lots of these and have never had this reported".  Yep, these days the customer is always wrong...  I sent an email which included the above photo, and they haven't gotten back to me yet.

Anyone else have this issue?

Cheers

No, never had issues with DSS, and I wouldn't make an issue out of this either.
The old parts look perfectly usable, if the rest of the kit is allright, I'd rebuild as is, and even if you want these parts new they can be obtained at every hardwarestore, the ring and clip don't need to be specific Honda parts.

that's why no one else has complained because they probably used the old ones, thats fine unless you have a damaged/rusted incomplete unit then youll be complaining?id ask them to send me new correct ones!often in aftermarket kits small parts are wrong or don't apply?

Robvangulik has missed the point completely.  When you pay over $40.00 for a product advertised as "A high quality Japanese replacement kit" from a reputable dealer, it should fit!  I'm sure David Silver himself would think this is completely unacceptable - he has a reputation to maintain.

Also, the "perfectly usable" parts were cleaned up with a metal soap pad and will rust very quickly.

And they still haven't gotten back to me...

Also, the picture of the kit on their website has the correct looking circlip.  I think they have a problem with their supplier..

Probably better to go with their completed repro master cyl....it's a nice unit.

I am sure DSS will make it right.  Great customer service on my end and even worked to save me $$$  I cant complain about that.

That's what I did recently, it really is a nice unit, and for only a few $$$ more than a quality rebuild kit.  But... I agree that the circlip and washer in their kit *should* fit, unfortunately its not uncommon for parts like this to be slightly different from original, such that a combination of new and original parts are needed to complete a rebuild, and not just in the motorcycle business, I see it quite often in refurbishing older Italian cars too.

It's good to let them know about the replacement parts being different. Myself, I'd use the old ones and sluff it off. But then again this could be reason for your problem.

I did consider it, but in the end I decided that if I was going to fit a non-standard master cylinder I might as well fit one that looks more modern.  Using a link in an old topic on this website I bought & fitted this (please excuse the crappy photo):

So I don't need my old master cylinder, but I'd already bought the rebuild kit & I was bored!

Paying recent attention to the front end (new fork seals, new top bridge, braided brake lines & new caliper) has highlighted that I need a new rotor.  The one on my bike has always had loose rivets and over the years they have worn the spider.  It's pretty noticeable now & is next on the list...

Thanks for this thread that reminded me to order a master cylinder from David Silver that has one for good price.  Plus the OEM style cap that will make it to look better.

I had to order new when my old master cyl leak brake fluid as a thin spray, not much but most likely enough to destroy my new tank from Yamiya.

hmm, I think mine is doing this now. . . there looks like a very small leak at the handle that is black in color.  I recently put new bars on and was thinking there was a kink causing excessive pressure and making it leak but its probably the MC.  Yes I have nice little speckles across my tank and even the chrome on my gas cap, didn't think it would do that :'(

I have seen very small drops on the fender.
Brake fluid is sometimes used as paint remover..  :(

My old brake master master cylinder can be repaired and saved for future use.  Collect parts not bad, soon a complete bike ;)

I didn't miss any point ;D I meant it when I wrote I never had issues with DSS, they have good parts and give good service. And I agree you should let them know there's something wrong with this set, BUT I wouldn't be prepared to wait for replacement parts I can obtain easy cheap and fast.

i have 2 and a half sets of 550 spokes (front and rear) sent to me free of charge because they had a slight yellow tinge to them from the electroplating process. very good service.

I too ordered the repro master cylinder. Also fitted my original cap and its been awesome thus far! no issues whatsoever. If i need anything, they will get my order.

I have to agree though, they need to be made aware of such situations, its the only way they can keep up their outstanding reputation. Im sure they have already sent you the new parts ;)

Hi Morini, I would definitely make them aware of the problem too. I'm pretty certain they will make things right for you. I recently ordered a repro headlight bucket, repro headlight ring & headlight with the parking lamp from them. However I could not use the headlight bucket as it wasn't perfectly circular. It was egg shaped and didn't fit headlight properly. I sent them photo's & they checked their stock and agreed there was a problem. DSS covered return mail costs & issued me a full refund.

Still no response.  I've sent another email & asked if I should resort to sending a snail mail letter addressed to Mr Silver himself...

Wow, that worked quickly.  I got an email from a manager.  They have to get a genuine kit in which they will then compare with the non-genuine kits they have in stock.  They will keep me posted...
