A few "new engine" oil questions.
« on: April 08, 2014, 11:57:02 AM »
First off, this is NOT a debate about which oils to use. No need to get the popcorn out, folks.

1. I have the Barnett +1 clutch kit. The little paper inside says you only need to soak the plates for like 5 minutes. I've always been under the impression that you need to soak them at least a day. Which is correct? Should I be better safe than sorry?

2. For break-in (no this will not be a break-in procedure debate thread, so put that popcorn back), what's the recommended schedule to change the oil? 50, then 500, then?

3. I'd like to monitor temp and pressure. Pressure should be easy, just get a mechanical gauge on the oil pump where the sender unit goes.

As for temp, that's a little less simple. Where and how should a sender (I'd like a mechanical one as well) be mounted? I did a little searching and saw MRieck recommended the temp be taken from the pan. I also read somewhere that the temp can be taken from the oil cooler/adapter plate (not sure which side). But as my guy fell through on machining me one (not sure why, but not a topic for this thread), I won't be using one yet. I do plan on it though.

4. Anything else I'm missing?

I put my temp sensor in the plug on the bottom of the engine on the left side. It works great. Dan

1) If the paper inside says 5min is fine then 5 min is probably fine. If you're not sure then soak them longer, it won't hurt them.

2) For break in I did 50, 150, 500, 1000 mile intervals for oil changes. If you have new rings and fresh bores/pistons then there will likely be a bit of "bedding in" happening and definitely some metal particulate floating around so best to change it often to begin with.

3) Not sure about oil temp and pressure monitoring. I don't think it's necessary for a stock build.

4) Vary the load when breaking in. For the first 500 miles I kept it under 6000RPM (some will argue this I'm sure) but I varied the load from idle to WOT. The rings need some cylinder pressure to seat in properly. Don't let it idle too much and stay out of traffic if at all possible! The rings wearing in will create excess heat and you need the air flow to get rid of it.

Enjoy!

Thanks whaleman. Now that you mentioned it, I do remember seeing that option as well. That's likely what I'll be doing. What sort of temps are you reading from it?

Ironworker, it's a complete rebuild from the bottom up. Far from a stock build. Check my build thread if you like.

Maybe 250 on a real hot day in slow traffic. Good place for gauges and senders.

After doing a bit more research (and talking to my BMW friend), I was reminded that I'm running a TrailTech Vapor dash, capable of reading oil temperature.

They sell an oil temp sensor (1/8x28 thread), about $25, and adapters to fit them to various metric threads. Since I'm set on running it from the oil caps on the bottom, I need to know what size thread they are.

No. The cap is the standard cap like on the right side of the oil galley. You must drill and tap for pipe thread. You have to be careful sealing the threads as it need to ground to read right. 1/8" is very small but if it is pipe thread just drill and tap for 1/8". No adaptors needed or wanted as adaptors increase how far it hangs down. Dan

I know they're all the same. The adapter and sensor don't hang down any longer than the setup you posted. My only concern is the depth of the adapter and sensor. I don't believe it'll be an issue but it's been forever since I've seen the distance between the cap and whatever's above it.

It's 1/8 BSPP which is basically a british NPT with parallel threads (instead of tapered) and seals with a crush washer.

Got it. That sure looks biger than 1/8". No worries there is nothing right above it. Dan

The adapter pictured is M12. The brass sensor sticking out is whatever size is used to tighten it. Here's a picture of the sensor itself.

Okay. Happen to know what thread size the oil caps are so I know which adapter to get?

Nevermind, after some searching it turned up M20x1.5

Great, they only sell up to M18... Time to send an email.

I am not sure the adapter would work as the stock cap is set up for an o-ring seal. I really think you are stuck with drilling and tapping. Dan

Hm, that is correct. Now to find a BSPP tap.

Nevermind, I'm a tard. I'll just buy the M6x1.0 sensor ~_~
