GEARING......?
« on: April 23, 2007, 06:08:30 PM »
Ok, got my throttle cables, clutch cable, rear brakes, ignition switch and air filter in today from CRC.  Installed all and went for a test ride (ended up putting 10 miles on her!)  This pig runs like a scalded dog!  Carbs still need rebuilding (kits are on the way) and needs tires, chain, sprockets, etc.

Here's the question for all SOHC owners:  What type of speed do you get out of each gear?  Specifically, does anybody get stuck at 3rd gear because hitting fourth would put you into suspended license territory?
To elaborate, I rode the bike pretty normal, no redlining, but in 3rd gear at 60 MPH the engine seemed very happy, humming right along, no hiccups.  If I then shifted to 4th, it would bog until I got to about 70MPH with about another 1500-2000RPM til redline.  My guess is that if I rode the bike properly, shifting up through the gears, I'd be at a ton or more in 5th gear.  The PO said that the rear wheel came from another type of old Honday and he had to remove chain links to get the sprocket to work.  The wheel is an 18" with a 4.10-18 tire on it.  Haven't counted teeth.  Wouldn't a smaller rear sprocket cause it to LOSE top speed but gain low end?  Just feels the other way when riding.  When I get my new chain/sprockets I'll be going back to 18/48 as was factory for the K6.
Just curious about the current situation, any ideas?

Haven't counted them, was going to do it when I had the wheel off to install brake shoes but I forgot ::)

If it has an 18 tooth front sprocket, you're geared for about 180mph if you can get it to rev 11,000 in top ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I am assuming that the front sprocket is 18T.  So, do you know what the change will be when I go to a 48T rear?

18/48 will give you my bike, plenty of bottom end, mine will smoke the tire with ease, but 70 is too buzzy for comfort on long rides, so I normally stay off the freeway where I can ride a bit slower. Plan to bump it up to a more comfortable level

18/48 is 2.66:1
18/37 is 2.05:1

17/37 is 2.17:1
16/37 is 2.31:1

I'm in 5th, but have a smaller rear tire so the overall final ratio is lower.

It will cruise at 70, it just vibrates more than I like, so for anything longer than 5-10 miles I take side roads and just cruise. When I had the original 18" rim it was a lot better, but went to a smaller tire and lost roughly 1.5 inch height, which was the same as throwing on a huge rear sprocket. Good for launching, but since my bikes a daily rider and I'm making longer runs it's not as good as when I put it together

No tach, so can't say what RPM I'm running.

front sprockets operate in reverse of the rear sprocket, for the rear, more teeth will give more power less top end speed, front more teeth will give less power more top end speed.

Ken.

I see....I think I'll try the stock tooth counts and see how it feels.  Easy enough to get a different rear later.  Great info, thanks merc and sam!
