RE: swing arm bushing life expectancy.

My Dad bought a new CB750 Four in '74. Put 100,000 miles on it before he traded it in on his '76K. Yes,100,000 miles in a little over 2 years. Yes,he was hard core! But he told me that he never wore out a swingarm bushing on any of his CB750's. He owned 4 of them off the showroom floor...lucky dog ;D
The darn fool didn't know it couldn't be done...so he went ahead and did it anyway.

Did he grease them? Or are we saying he never wore them out AND never maintained them?

I am having the exact problem - usually fine, but sometimes I get a distinct CLUNK. I never had this before until I removed the rear wheel to inspect for brake pad wear. I didn't have to replace or remove the pads, just put the cover back on and mounted the wheel. I used the proper shoulder bolts and the torque arm doesn't seem to have become ovalized - I can't feel any play at the shoulder bolts. Anyone have some recommendations of what else to check?

Also worth noting, the rear wheel is pushing as far into the swing-arm as possible due to the chain length. One more link and I was 1/3 through my available chain adjustment. Could that have anything to do with it?

One other thing - the swing arm has horizontal play at the rear shoulder bolt. Is this normal? The nut and washer are tightened as far down as they can go. Am I missing a washer or something? Please see the photos for examples.
re: the swingarm. There should not be any play. Bad swingarm bushings could cause the sound/feel. But you would also feel it in the handling, though it may be subtle. Like its trying to steer with the rear wheel.

Another thing I've seen on other threads is the the brake lining separating from the shoes.

Shouldn't be the swing arm bushings - I had them replaced at the start of last season. Handling has always felt fine.

Not sure about the pads. It never clunked as far as I can remember from before I checked the pads, so I suspect I've made a mistake reinstalling the wheel. I have this photo comparing new pads to the ones currently in use. Hard to see much from it, but they look pretty good to me. Maybe I can find another photo before pulling the wheel off to check.
