Recomendations for an Image size converter
« on: September 13, 2006, 06:40:26 PM »
Greetings Fellow SOHC4ites,
Can anyone recommend an image conversion utility that I could use to take my rather large Jpeg files from my digital camera and batch convert them to a smaller size for posting to the gallery?

You can try IrfanView, free download. What image editing software came with your camera? That should have the capability also.

I just use mspaint (if you have windows..)  Highlight the .jpg of your choice, right-click, and pick "Open With"..  Choose mspaint.  In paint, go to Image->stretch/skew..  Shrink down the picture- I use 40%/40%.  make sure you shrink both H and V by the same amount, or else you will get distorted images.  Then "Save As"..  Actually, to be safe, you probably want to "Save As" as soon as you open the pic, that way there is no danger of over-writing your original.

Make sure you retain ".jpg" as file type too.  That's it.  Big shrinking, low kb pics that look good on the web.

If you run Windows XP, Google 'image resizer xp'

There's a free Microsoft Powertoy called Image Resizer.  Install it, and when you select one or more photos, right click and there's a menu option to resize images.  Select the output size and you're done.  Do one or 100 at a time.  It creates new files.  Dead easy - all I ever use.

Thank you for all of the great recomendations. I ended up going with the Power Toys image resizer. It's a small download. like 600kb. Works right from the right mouse button and can convert many  files by simply selecting them and clicking a radio button for the size you desire.

Again Thank you!

Ed! Beware! It's Microsoft product, y'know. You'll convert x pictures and you will need to buy faster version, or download a patch or authenticate on some server..... ;D

Just kidding, but Irfan apart of converting has maaaany more things.

nevertheless - whatever works for you.

i was going to recommend irfanview as well but, with the ability to do multiple images simultaneously... i think the microsoft product fits the bill better if all one wants to do is resize.

Uh-Oh.  If it's Windows, you can expect to see one of these...

Buber, Yes, I considered this aspect of the software. As it turns out, the power toys applications seem to not be written by MS. (Perhaps explaining their usefulness and the name "Power Toys" as opposed to "Weak (costly, disfunctional, error prone) Bludgeon"!)

Typically, I do most of my home based computing on non-MS based systems (also Do Not read as Apple, Unix) but decided to use MS for this task.

The other recomended products all sounded really good, but in the end I was only interested in bulk resizing.

YES! I do have a ZX Specturm somewhere... Those were times. Cassette memory, 48KB of internal memory, whole 16 colours...... And things were smooth!
Anyway, whatever does a task for you will work, and I second Heffay - your intent was to get something more out of this thread, right?  ;)
