Back for more!
« on: March 30, 2014, 08:20:09 AM »
Hi guys. I haven't been on this for a few years and my bike has been sitting idle for just as long. I had medical and family issues keeping me from working on it. I have all new cables and a new battery coming. I just rewired my bike and I need to start working on a new seat and foot controls.

I remember a few years back someone was making their own rearsets out of a newer bikes foot controls but I can't seem to find the post now. I remember they made a plate and put it into the triangle that normally holds the pegs. If anyone can point me to that post it would be great.

Also I want to go through and clean my carbs. I'm pretty sure they are gummed up from sitting. Any advice on this? I've never messed with carbs. Or should I just find someone else to do it?

No!

Getting carbs out and back in is more difficult (fiddly) than the actual work on the carbs themselves.  Just work slowly and don't overtorque anything.  Use a magnifying glass to view the holes in the jets since they'll look clean and round to your naked eye.  The jet itself becomes a pinhole lens to make the light spot look round.  Use a strand of copper wire or something else soft to clean the jet since the brass is too soft to clean with steel.

You can probably find videos or other posts to give detailed instructions for cleaning and setting the float height.  But carbs are nothing to be afraid of.

I think you'll like the feeling of knowing what's inside.

Also does anyone have pics of their rear sets? Im looking for inspiration. I'd rather make them than buy. I just got a new tig welder that I'm dying to use.

Welcome back...remember to take pics as you disassemble. Helps when putting it back together if this is your first carb rebuild. You want to put the stuff from carb #1 back into carb #1. You do not want to mismatch the stuff. I use 4 containers and label then 1-4 so you do not mix stuff up. Once you start you will see it is not a big deal. The bike will run better than ever. Oh, and make sure your tank is clean. The last thing you want to do is run crap from the bottom of the tank into those nice clean carbs.

You may want to turn the air screws in gently while counting.  Gently.  The starting point for adjustment is usually 1 turn out from seated (gently).  It's also easier to find where the screw is seated than when it's out entirely.  When reassembling it's harder to figure out when to start counting when putting the screw in, so put it all the way in (gently) then back out one turn (or however many turns yours were out originally.

If you don't have to unscrew the choke rods you may want to pass on them.  Otherwise, get good measurements on the distance.  It's another place where it's hard to count.

The rods from the slides to the throttle arms don't have to be exactly what they are now, but all carbs have to be the same.  Just look at the top to see if the rod sticks up a little or sticks up several threads.  When i reassemble i hang the rack of carbs in a window and make the tiny crescents of light at the bottom of the slides equal.  If the whole rack is a little different from the way it is now, you can acjust with the throttle rocker adjustment.

I cannot think of anything else where counting or measuring is required.  That air screw is the only one I count.

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense, doesn't sound too bad when you put it like that!

So I started to take apart my carbs and when I got the float bowls off they were immaculate. The gaskets even looked brand new. Last time I started it was 2 years ago and I remember it was choppy and sputtering.
My carb boots are rock hard. Could my issue be because of this? I have wintergreen oil on the way im going to give it a shot at softening them up. I didn't mess with any adjustment screws on the carbs just incase its the boots that are the problem.

Probably should pull all your jets since you have the carbs on the table! Especially the emulsifier tubes.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Ok I took the jets out tonight and all were pretty clean except the main on #1 carb. I cleaned them all anyway and reinstalled. I'm still waiting on the wintergreen oil. Hopefully when I put it all back on the bike my problems go away.
