Cam chain tensioner o-ring
« on: March 29, 2015, 08:38:29 PM »
Is there any way to replace the cam chain tensioner o-ring from outside the motor on a '76 CB550K? From the parts fiche, it looks like there's a ring around the stud from the inside, and it doesn't look like you can get to it from outside the motor. Mine's leaking like a sieve and I'd love to easily replace it...

Thanks,

TF

I'm not sure it matters whether the ring is on the outside or the inside, so long as the gap is plugged.  Mine was installed on the outside.  After tightening the tensioner the o-ring is wedged into the gap, sealing it.

Optimally it should be on the inside though.

Why not just put an o-ring on from the outside and see how it works?   They're cheap enough.

I did this on mine. The washer behind the nut presses the o-ring into place. I haven't had any leaks from that area so far.

It's a little motor and likes having the tits revved off it.

It installs from the outside into a recess for it. Don't damage the aluminum removing the old one and grease the new one well. The threads on the tensioner make it a little difficult getting it in place without potential damage to the oring.

Well that's embarrassing. I removed the nut on the tensioner a while back looking for an oring to replace, but didn't find one and  I guess I didn't notice a recess in outside of the cylinder. But it's good to hear I was wrong. Thanks guys.
