Where to pull engine oil temperature? Oil pan or oil tank?
« on: April 11, 2014, 06:54:12 AM »
I am in the process of wiring up a Motogadget gauge and will be installing an oil temp sensor.
The sensor will be the type where you replace the oil drain plug with this sensor.

I can either put it in the oil tank or the oil pan under the bike.

Where would you install it?

Thanks!

Take your choice..............the oil gets heated the most by passing through the head of the motor. Keeping an eye on oil temp won't hurt..........but keeping the proper amount of oil in the system is a must ;) ;)

Oil tank - mainly because of the wires.

I would install it at the main oil gallery plug as that’s a good spot to monitor the oil temp going up to the cylinders/head. I use a oil tank dipstick thermometer knowing that it’s not the best location, but still reads relative for my needs.

Besides, I’m not ready to give up my (obsolete aftermarket) screw-in Isocycle main oil galley cooler that was seen back in the heyday.

If your converting to a spin-on filter, tap into the adapter plate and mount your sending unit there.  That will give you a temp reading of the oil just before it enters the engine main bearings.

It wont matter where you put it wiskey.
In terms of looking at a gauge using that information to make a decision,  any time difference wont make any difference. Re temp variation its up and down all over the place but only couple of degrees.
SO put it in the most practical easiest spot, have a slug of whisky, chill out and enjoy the fruits of your labour knowing if its a stinking hot day the oil will be hot , if its a cold morning and you want to flog the guts out of the motor you just gotta wait a while. ::)

I put mine in the sump. I tapped the plug on the left side. This way if I messed up I could buy a new plug. It is also more protected here. Dan
