Killed my '73 500f - Temporarily I'm sure...
« on: April 13, 2014, 03:11:08 pm »
Really in a jam/stuck on this one. I Recently decided to upgrade to a dyna s ignition and coils. I also needed to replace my handlebar controls (previously broke the "start" button rendering my baby a kick start only) so I figured I would replace the start and kill switch with the one found at the first link below. I also replaced the headlight/turn signal/horn, etc... Controls with the one found at the second link listed below.

I know I broke a rule by doing too many things at once so there are a lot of variables right now.  I've also spent a lot of time staring at my rats nest, shop manual and online diagrams...I'm stuck!

When I turn the key I have the following: taillight, brake light, oil and neutral sensor lights, blinkers.

What am I missing /what did I do wrong?  I'm an electrical novice but am otherwise rather handy in the shop so I should really be able to figure this out - with your help.

Note: these modern controls listed below DO NOT match the wire colors of the vintage/OE wiring harness and I seem to have misplaced my secret decoder ring. Also, the bike started and ran before these changes with electric start (prior to breaking the switch) and with the kick starter.

Any help or tips is greatly appreciated. Questions?

Thanks!

You'll need that decoder ring. Good luck!

I'd get a meter or test light and start by discovering the function of the wires in the new controls. Make a list, then print the wiring diagram for your bike. I like to glue it to a piece of cardboard and stand it up where I'm working. Think it through and when you are done you'll understand your wiring.

Have you downloaded the factory wiring diagram? If not, do so. You can find it here:
http://manuals.sohc4.net/CB500/HSM500550_11.pdf

Then, start re-tracing what you have, compared to what "was". Since your brake light and indicators are not wired correctly, they should be easy to track down and correct.

Typically the Dyna ignition is plug-and-play as are the coils. Did you change something with the wiring there? If so, post up some pics, and I'm sure it can be sorted out. Lots of folks with Dyna products here.

Calj737: thanks for that download, it looks far more useful than the clymer diagrams.

Picked up a multimeter tonight and will get to work tomorrow night.

I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks.

Now that you have a meter you should be able to track it down.

I am constantly surprised by the people that start wlectrical projects without one. If you own any kind of old motor vehicle: car, bike, boat, tractor, etc, having a multimeter and knowing how to use one is essential.
