new guy up in canada
« on: April 10, 2014, 12:44:51 PM »
hello all

just joined the group. I am interested in learning more about the CB750 in particular the K0 model. I am in the process of purchasing a 1969 CB750 to restore so I may have plenty of questions. I have recently restored an '81 Honda CBX and am in the process of finishing an '86 Honda VF1000R. when I learn how to use the site I will post some pics. as mentioned I am looking to purchase a '69 CB that has been somewhat molested over the years. I can pick it up for 600-700 bucks but she's rough. I figure the frame and motor are worth that as a base to start resto. don't get excited, its not a sandcast.  :( was wondering about replacement parts etc. i look forward to tapping your knowledge.

thx a lot!

hello all

so I have now wedged down in my garage a Honda cb750k0 (I think). looks like a '70???? I am hoping you can help guide me in the right direction with this bike based on the info I can provide. I am looking for your opinions on the significants of this bike/model which in turn will tell me to go back to rock stock  if its an important bike or a more "freestyle" approach if it is not a significant model. the vin plate on the steering head reads 1/70 and the vin # is cb750-1021567 the # on the motor looks to be CB750L 1021777 (the L MAY be an E) it's hard to read. I THINK its a K0 but the 1/70 date on the vin is confusing me? I have the finned side covers but the carbs use a cable linkage rather than the 4 individual cables? the headlight ears are chrome but keep in mind someone "customized" this thing back in the '70's. I will try and upload some pics if I can figure out how. I am not sure of pixel requirments etc. could anyone advise requirements for uploading photos? also, what is the best shop manual to buy? I see a lot of clymers and hayes? anyone have an opinion of which one I should try and source, or another one?

look forward to your comments, good OR bad. just want to find out what i'm sitting on?

thx a lot!

as was hoping you guys could shed some light. I THINK what I have is a 1970 K0 model if such a thing exists. if it is a K0 then I think I should bring it back to stock condition as I feel it would be worth more as a stock resto???? that being said I may have some stuff to unload or trade such as the longer fork uppers and the seat and the 16" rear wheel to name a few. i will be looking for the correct parts to swap them out with. once i found out what exactly i have i will start the search for the correct parts.

thx

Welcome Kent - appears to be a KO indeed. My KO is also a 1/70 build with 102***** numbers. Very sought after bike, however, as you know yours had MANY modifications over the years. I hope the previous owner gave you a big box of parts with it including title. How much money are you planning on sticking into it to get it back to original? A quick look at the pics - missing are the correct carbs (or keep those carbs), fork ears, forks, chain guard, fenders, handlebar switches, blinkers, center stand, recessed ignition switch with bracket and air box. (And that is just a quick look). :) Where is the master cylinder and caliper? And the front tire is on backwards in looking at the location of that front brake disc (should be on the left side). Not to mention the HM300 exhaust. Not saying you need all this stuff to get it on the road, but if you want it back to original...your best spot for parts is eBay or try the "wanted" section on this board. As far as a manual go with the Honda service manual. They pop up on eBay too. Good luck with your project and let us know how you come out.

hey johnie and fuzzie

thanks for the input. I fully expect to put a bunch of money into this if I am going back to stock. I would love to use NOS items but I am not sure how easy they will be to find. I do have the front master cylinder and caliper and the front fender. the previous owner is sure he has the rear fender and taillight and is going to get it to me. as far as the rest of the items mentioned you are correct and I am sure there will be more. I would fully expect to spend probably at least 5-6K to get this back to a reasonable shape and am hoping I would still be in under what the bike would be worth. what do you think, am I in the ballpark? I am just now working out what parts are required first and will start searching a little harder now that it sounds like it is a project worth taking on. as mentioned I have already done a CBX and just finished off a VF1000R so I will need to get my hands dirty with something else. I am now struggling with going repop or NOS if I can find these items.

as far as the costs go I picked it up for 600 bucks. the last time it was insured was 1990 so there will be some issues I will need to address as they creep up. I am hoping to get the motor fired up and run through the gears just so I know it runs then I will start stripping it down. as of today no go but wasn't at it very long. exactly when the mods were done I cant say but the PM said it was some time ago.

attached a pic of the cbx and vf1000r for fun.

thx guys!

Yamiya has. A lot of the parts, pricey but correct. Body parts and seat will be about two thousand.. But it WILL make it the bike. We all love, the other big hit is pipes...get any parts he has.

754 is correct...Yamiya http://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=index&language=en has a lot of nice parts for your bike. Many of us have used them. They are located in Japan and a real good company with excellent parts. Shipping from them is faster than in the USA. Do you have a dealer near you? Keep in mind some of the mass production parts are still available from the dealer. Things like blinker housing and blinker lenses. Another good source in the USA is Western Hills Honda in Ohio. They bought a lot of old stock from dealers. So that gives you a few spots to check out. You can always have some parts rechromed too. I spent about $2,000 on KO chrome. If you can find a good chromer in your area maybe you can save on shipping. The original carbs do show up on eBay and you would also need the carb mounting plate. Keep an eye out. I see someone is making repop carb mounting plates on eBay. Things like the chain guard and seat are special to the KO so before you buy those you might want to find out what is era correct for the KO. Good luck and let us know how you come out.

well guys today was a great day!

changed oil and filter and rigged up a temp fuel system. put fuel to carbs and had some small leaks that seemed to stop within a few minutes. sorted out some wiring issues with the non-stock key switch and got voltage. I believe my starter solenoid is gone so used the old flat blade screwdriver to jump the terminals and cranked over but would not fire. pulled plug and had spark. pulled the timing cover and the points back plate was hard over to one side which seemed kinda strange. static timed the points to as close as possible and tried her again. after half a dozen kicks she came to life. sounded really good and had great oil pressure which always concerns me. obviously didn't run it long but was firing on all 4 cyls. and sounded solid with little blips of the throttle. only problem was that I forgot my cbx and vf1000r were behind it and covered them with rust particle out of the pipe  >:(

here is my next issue I am hoping you can help out with. seems the clutch plates are stuck together. when I pull the clutch in it will not disengage or engage, not sure which way is what. bottom line is I believe the pressure plates are stuck together. I want to get them freed up somehow so I can run thru the gears next to make sure the tranny is functioning properly. after I have confirmed that then I can start breaking her down for powder coat etc.  any ideas or thoughts you may have would be much appreciated.

thx a lot!
