i've been using a 50/50 blend of Smart Balance Spread and "Honey I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" for about half a year.  she smokes a little bit and smells like a Danish cookie at idle, but she really hauls ass!

So, we are seeing success with a diversity of oils including some that are non motorcycle specific. Is this because with these motorcycles we change the oil in a timely manner, therefore not giving enough time for potential problems to occur...?

Anyone....?

Nuke, are you sure the clutch started to slip right after you put in the new oil?  The CB750K clutches aren't great to start with, and maybe you just recently warped a clutch plate.  My clutch went early this year, and I got the APE extra friction discs kit, now the clutch is also like a normal bike's.

As for oil, Nuke, next time go to canadian tire.  They sell motorcycle specific oil for way cheaper than any motorbike shop.  I'll often use their motomaster motorcycle oil cause i'm sure it's just the Castrol motorcycle oil in a different package, which they also sell.

My take on motorcycle specific oil is that it's designed for the higher temps that a motorbike will see.  I don't think it's synthetic.  Back when I was into Austin Mini's, I remember reading that synthetic oils break down in gearboxes and since a Mini has it's gearbox in the sump like a motorbike, not to use synthetic oils.  I even helped a friend part out a shares car that he bought and the gearbox was full of this creamy slime... don't know if it was synthetic, but it made us think about it.

Creamy slime means water got into the cranckase and mixed with the oil.

It was very very shortly after the oil change. I can't recall but it might have been 30 and not 40. A few guys said that the energy conserving or Melobdenum is not present in anything heavier than 30. That might be an issue :-\. I will check out the motomaster MC oil from Canadian Tire. I love that store and it loves me ;D. By the way my 78 is an F2 so I don't know how much it differs from the K8. By the way Dakeddie...what city Canadian tire do you shop @.

thanks

There have been tons of mis-information going around about synthetics. Fact is, they are better than normal oil in virtually anything period.
Some say they cause leaks. They dont cause them, they jsut remove the sludge that was stopping up the leak for the time being. That seal has to be replaced sometime no matter what. Synthetics last longer in gearboxes than regular oil does also. You can go longer before changing it. Its one drawback it cost.

I have used auto oil in all my bikes from my old BSA to my current cb650. Never had any trouble with the clutches. I do change my oil every 1000 to 1500 miles though.

Hmmm...once the temps started getting into the lower 30F's
my bike wouldn't start with the 20w50 Castrol in it.
Changed over to 10w40 elCheapo oil. Runs / starts fine now.
15,000 miles and counting on the 76 cb550
peace,

castrol gtx 10w-40

Ditto.  Also, My clutch used to slip, but after replacing the springs, it's rock solid.
