Did I make the right choice?
« on: April 13, 2014, 04:32:27 am »
Months ago you might remember in the Other Bike Section I was looking at a nice, all original 1979 dohc Anniversary Edition CB750. Can't stand to think of these old, still all original Honda's(even the dohc) being sold to someone who might chop and cut them up. So that being said I was thinking about buying it if nothing more just to give it a good home and keeping it just like it is. But know matter how I looked at it( front, back,or side I couldn't make myself like the styling of Honda's first try at redesigning of their classic sohc CB750 into a dohc. My gut told me to hold off and be patience and if you do get another Honda wait for the one that looks great from all angles and the one you really like.

I far as know this dohc Anniversary Edition is still for sale if any of you dohcamers are interested ;D

I like the styling on the C model DOHCs they are a little lower and are nice at traffic lights.

The K4 is a nice find though, I think it will hold value better.

I looked on CL for the DOHC it does not come up under Greensboro or Asheville or Raleigh, where did you find it?

Ah yes the Wang Stev-o. I still have it I really do ::) Just got new brake lines in from Slingshot and got a rear m/c kit from Honda. Will be getting new rubber shortly and will start getting things back together. I run Dunlop 404's on my 750's and really like them but don't see where Dunlop makes a 120/90/17 rear tire only have a 130/90/17. Little thicker side wall but think it would be fine as far as clearance. I see where some Wang owners run this size. I'll probably check out some other tire brands also.

just so you know they made 5000 of the 1979 cb750L anniversary edition. So they aren't particularly rare and most of them show up in nice condition.

Here is the thing....you didn't get a chance to ride it did you? One of the things I always point out about the DOHC cb750s is that they fixed all the shortcomings of the SOHC in terms of ride quality and packaging. Sure it looks ugly to some but most people I know who ride one comment on how "modern" it feels while still maintaining the character of the old SOHC. If you didn't ride it, then I say you didn't make the right decision because your decision was based on a half formulated opinion based on curb appeal.

However, if you really want a DOHC I wholeheartedly recommend getting a 1981-82 cb900f. They are just fantastic riding bikes that work really well, look like the superbike racers of the same era (including the spencer paint scheme) and perfectly bridge modern sporting honda with the old original superbike origins of the SOHC. I would recommend an 1100F for the 1 year only exclusivity and magnesium racing bits but the they have already inflated in price where as the 900F is 4/5ths the same bike and still fairly cheap. Also the F series supersports have a thriving community and aftermarket.
