APE adj cam sprocket wont fit.
« on: April 13, 2014, 07:47:13 pm »
F2 cam.
Couldn't figure out why I couldn't fit my chain over the sprocket.  Then I compared it to the original. See the pictures.
The APE sprocket notches are too narrow to sit down on the cam compared to the stock sprocket.
Anyone have a work around for this?

I should also mention that the narrowness of the APE cutouts prevents me from putting the sprocket on the chain first, and the threading the cam.....stumped :-\

Dremel is NOT needed. Chain on first then sprocket with beveled edge facing the center next. Lift chain onto sprocket before sliding sprocket into place. It'd be easier for me to tell you if I had one in front of me. It WILL work. Rotate the sprocket 180 degrees.

I thought you couldn't get the sprocket on the cam, my Ape one was like that, very tight and had to dremel a tad off the inside of the sprocket so it would go on, just a tad.

Just a thought is the tension installed ?   If so, remove it and preset the spring

My APE sprocket needed to taste the grinding tool too. It was too tight to fit the cam at all. I tested old sprocket that had perfect fit on new cam. New APE sprocket did not fit old cam either. After that I had to grind the hole to fit cam, rather much. NOT the surface coating only, metal had to be removed.
I'm not sure if I'll use that sprocket again, I have a new Falicon that has lower weight as well.

My old sprocket my local tuner provided 30 years ago is an F2 sprocket where he grinded the bolt holes, oval enough for adjusting the cam. That sprocket is really light when it look like a Swiss cheese.

No, I could get it on, but just couldn't get the chain on it.
I was following the method in the HM book, holding the sprocket on the #2 side of the cam chain, fishing the cam through, and then lifting the chain on. I just couldn't get the chain all the way up on the sprocket.
Jerrys method put the sprocket on the #3 side, and then fish everything through.
I think the issue was the lack of wiggle room in the cam chain tunnel.  With the sprocket on the outside of the chain, it jumped on easily.
I had trouble getting the sprocket with the chain installed up onto the carrier of the cam, but a temp torquing of the center cam tower bolts gave it room.  No dremel needed.
Yes, my tensioner was NOT installed.
Thanks for all your help and ideas.

I had to fiddle with  my APE cam sprocket due to my inexperience, but it went right on and over a fairly large cam too, A honda F2 first, then a Kenny Harmon F.

My was impossible to fit on cam without chain, cam in my hand sprocket hole too tight.
Another thing to make the cam chain on sprocket when mounting it on cam placed in cam towers.
