Hello & Thanks!
« on: August 14, 2006, 07:47:54 AM »
Hello everyone;

I just received my account activation email and thought I'd drop a (thread) line to say Thanks! to everyone for all the advice I've gathered here over the past few months.

In late May I bought my first motorcycle, a 1977 CB750K, for which I paid the princely sum of $300. Canadian, or about $275. Yankeebux.

I graduated from high school in '77 and at the time the CB750 was pretty much the coolest bike around; I know I've always liked the four pipes, so when I was looking for a decent used starter bike and saw this one, it was an easy decision.

Of course it hadn't been running in several years, so it required a few hundred dollars worth of the usual... carbs cleaned, new battery, front caliper un-seizing and the government mandated safety inspection we do here in Nova Scotia every year with all our vehicles.

In the months that followed I tinkered with the bike myself, removing a Windjammer fairing, sissy bar and other touring bolt-ons, replacing them and other missing trim bits with stock items from eBay. I'm the third owner and the first two owners were both "bikers for Christ" types, so there were lots of religious decals and crosses to remove in my quest to return the bike to stock.

Never having ridden and with the safety training course booked solid until late this fall, I then spied on the weekend course with a like-minded newbie friend and we taught ourselves how to ride in my parking lot...I  got my beginners license a couple of weeks ago and am enjoying the many local lakeside and coastal two lane twisty country roads we have here in Nova Scotia immensely. (my pal picked up an '81 Honda CM400E, which is also a nice bike but a bit Shriner's Parade small for me)

Along the way I picked up lots of bits of information on oil recommendations, electrical tips and so forth from here on the Forums.

I'll post a pic or two shortly, but in the meantime I wanted to say Thanks!...you guys have been a great help to this newbie to the Forums... and to the wonderful sport of riding... already.

Welcome. Look forward to the pics. Sounds like you put some time (and $$) into getting her back to her non-touring figure.  ;)
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Welcome to the forum.

I graduated in 78 and ended up with a 78K. Funny how things work out.

One snide comment about 78Ks and I'm going to explode >:( just let it go boys.........

This should go in the FAQ's under "How to make a good first post"!

None of this "Hey guys, I just bought this old bike, it's a CB-something, it doesn't run, what's wrong with it?" stuff. ;D

Welcome!

There ya go...I've added a few quick pics taken today just outside Halifax of my pricey $300. ride...I'll post better ones once I get the OEM seat (eBay) and tank decals on.

Funny you guys mentioned Chevy SS's...I think the CB750 is the Chevy Nova SS of old (classic?) bikes....fast, reliable and affordable.

I see there's at least one other poster here from Nova Scotia (hi!)...for those who don't know where we are, Nova Scotia is located on the east coast of Canada, directly above Maine. It's a predominantly rural province with one medium sized city (Halifax) that has a population of about 350,000 of the 950,000 people in the province.

Nova Scotia is surrounded by ocean basically on all sides, with lots of two lane twisty coastal roads...there are also lots of lakes throughout the province with many inland two lane roads suited for biking.

Our bike season is fairly short, but we do have some of the best scenery and environmentally undisturbed surroundings you'll find anywhere in North America.

One good site to see and learn more about Nova Scotia from a biker's perspective is:

i totally agree winston, i find this year especially busy for bikes, i see them all the time here at work. the driving season is fairly short, but i was out in march this year, driving around in insulated coveralls and winter mittens. it was quite the sight but i was having a good time!

Another Thankyou to the Forum...my tach started fluttering and wowing badly over the weekend...so I looked it up here, found the Flickering Tach thread (with pics, no less) and gave the socket on the cylinder head a few good shots of Release-All to first try de-gooing the sender without taking it off.

Voila! 1 Stable, accurate tach.

Thanks dudes!
