Metal pieces in 650 oil pan
« on: April 13, 2014, 02:25:34 PM »
I'm in the middle of replacing the starter clutch on my '81 650 and have kept a plastic pan with the drain oil in it under the bike while the oil pan is removed. When I removed the starter clutch, a couple pins and rollers fell into my pan. Digging them out with a magnet, I found the below two pieces.

They're approx 25 mm in diameter. I've been through all the parts fiche and have found some 25 mm thrust washers, but they look different. Anyone have a guess? Been rotating the trans with a flashlight and a magnet the past half hour and haven't found any of the rest.

Not a 650 guy but does look like something that may have been on a tranny spline of some type.

I'm not really a 650 guy either, hardly even a 550 guy. The thing that bothers me is the rest of this piece is nowhere to be found.

I had wiped the drain pan clean to reuse the oil (only has 20 miles on it) so I KNOW this wasn't in there before. Yet I've had this pan under the bike for a week, also replaced a battery cable, tank mounting rubber, maybe a couple other things. So there's a possibility it's not even a transmission part.

Take another picture with a coin or something next to it too give some better insight into the scale of the size of the pieces. Those divots on the platform don't help much.

Sure will later today. I matched the radius to a 25 mm socket if that helps.

Another pic attached. Hopefully I can spend more time searching for the other pieces tomorrow.

Looks like a clip may have broken. I'd be tempted to pull the motor apart as you wouldn't want something wrong happening at speed.

Those are definitely pieces from one of the thrust washers on either the primary shaft (#23), or transmission (#24,#27).
As the starter clutch did the grenade routine with the springs, and rollers. I would suspect the primary shaft first. Open case inspection would be called for.

Great, thanks. Better to know and be able to do something about it now. Unfortunately I already have the primary shaft out and everything appears to be present and intact, so it looks like this motor is coming out. And the bike was almost done!!

Any maintenance to be done while I have the case open? This bike has 12k miles on it, but has been sitting for a long time. Compression reads about 150# all the way around and I've replaced the valve seals. I'm guessing I'll already be doing a new head gasket by splitting this apart, but what else? Oil seals? Primary chain? I'd rather fix things now than later, but don't want to be needlessly replacing parts. So far everything appears to have very little wear while turning smoothly, no play, etc.  Basically I see no reason to do the rings, valve guides, head machining, etc. but I've never had one of these apart before.

if splitting the cases, I'd replace the two crankshaft seals, they are cheap. New rings would also be on my list if you can get them for the right price, a complete gasket set will give you the head and base gaskets along with the oil seals{not crankshaft} and exhaust crush washers. primary drive chain should be good, it has an auto tensioner.
I have a complete 650 transmission set lying around but wont get the chance to look at it for an idea where those pieces are from for a couple of days.

It is not necessary to remove the top end to open up the bottom.
With 150# compression I would leave the top end alone.

For reference
Countershaft washers, and clips. Note the washer in the lower right.
