Modifying 550 frame
« on: April 16, 2014, 03:54:45 PM »
I have a 74 550 frame that I want to detab and modify the seat frame. I know, I know? I'm ruining a classic frame blah blah blah. Once you can get over that, got any suggestions? I'll be adding a hoop with a brace and a flat seat. I'll be moving the battery under the seat and removing the center stand as well. I'll be adding some reinforcements to the triangle too. Rear sets will be added too. I want to trim off what I can before powder coating.

If you've got pictures, diagrams, ect, they would be greatly appreciated!

Jordan,

Just to help clarify your question, by adding a "flat seat," will you be using a brat-style seat (flat from end to end)?  If so, where do you intend to "mov[e] the batter under the seat" since there's no speed hump to hide one under?  Are you trying to completely open up the triangle (hide all electronics, battery, etc.)?

Don,

Yea, I'm planning on mounting the seat like a brat seat with a pan under it to hold the electronics and a trough above the carbs to hold one of those little overpriced batteries. Am I crazy?

No, you can sandwich a small Ballistic or similar lithium battery in a box under the seat.  Your electronics tray will most likely be located further to the rear, partially above the carbs and above the triangle.  It will not be completely hidden by the frame rails, since you will need enough depth to fit the battery in sideways.  You will need about 2.4 inches of depth for the battery and any strap/fixture to hold it in place.  The only thing you may want to think about is where to mount your regulator/recitfier (assuming you are going with a modern solid state unit).  I would recommend against mounting this in a such a small tight space, since it will have no fresh air to cool and you can end up frying the unit.  I've seen people mount them on the bottom of their electronics tray so the cooling fins are exposed to fresh air, but this might render it visible.

Jordan, you are crazy. But this idea is not the reason.  8)

Mount your battery (yep, small expensive units work great) on the swing arm pivot rod. Build a small retaining bracket to fit. This will minimize the exposure and you won't need a great deal of flexibility in the length of the battery leads. In fact, its awfully darn close to stock position.

I'd be skeptical if there were sufficient room above the carbs, but under the backbone to mount a "tray". Especially since you're running Mikunis on this build, no? Don is dead right, keep the Reg/Rec in the open. I've given thought to mounting it where the horn normally would be...? Fresh air abounds, "hidden" from direct view, and proximal to major electrics. (Think short wiring harnesses).

That leaves you with only need a solenoid, fuses and relays. I know you're tight on dough, BUT, a MotoGadget m-unit is your answer. A device (see pic) that small has EVERYTHING inside it. Yep, its $400, but hey, with all the Wedding $$$$ heading your way, might be worth an advance on the expenditure  ;)

As for the seat hoop, if you're planning on 2-up, keep the triangular brace from stock. You could remove the passenger rear peg gussets, and use Devin's new relocation bracket? Then the only thing you need to consider is mods to the subframe hoop for the seat.

Crop it beyond the shock mount, buy a new pre-made unit, and have a good welder TIG it in. Easy-squeezy. Also insures you can mount rear indicators, tail light, license plate, etc...

As for a brace, I'd encourage you to think about installing a cross brace between the rear uprights of the engine cage, horizontally. Put in between the hangars bolts, and weld it in. Also, have someone re-weld the slip-fit riveted seams on the front of the cage where the head stock meets.

Have you started welding your bracing, yet, or are you too busy with your cut-off wheel detabbing the frame?

Neither yet, I won't be working on the frame for at least a month. The wedding is fast approaching and my new wife will be leaving in August for PA. After that, it's on!

Ok, so you have a month to map out your frame mods.  I'm looking forward to seeing some progress in August, damnit!

Seriously, you moving To the "Right" coast? How exciting. There's some awfully good roads to ride in that neck of the woods, western side of PA, upstate NY, and on into New England. Better trade in your t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops for some fleece and turtlenecks.

The big upside is the beaches. The water actually gets warm! No sea lions, far fewer sharks, and the lobsters out here are large and good. A pretty decent trade-off. We will have to pry Don loose for an extended Fall leaf-peeper ride!

Cal,  can't wait to ride out there. I do love our sharks and seals here though. Don will have to come visit!

Whereabouts in Penn are you moving to?  Philly, Harrisburg, Pittsburg?  You will definitely get to see the seasons change.  Soak up some sunshine for the next year.  You will need your Vitamin D!  I have not been riding on the Right Coast.  I could go for that, as long as it's not snowing!

We'll be an hour east of Pittsburg in a small suburb.  We'll definitely be making trips to the coast to meet up with family in CT and NY.
