Hondamatic Front Wheel Bearing Replacement
« on: April 16, 2014, 06:16:01 PM »
Anyone know the correct procedure/steps in installing new front wheel bearings.  I installed them, but noticed two issues - The bearings do not seat all the way in to the interior "lip".  Should one bearing be installed first.  I had installed the Retainer/brake  side first then the Right/Speedo side.  Local shop said they had heard some may need to go in first but do not know for sure.  Secondly,  the inner sleeve has two different tri-pronged end that slip on to each end of the sleeve.  In the schematics they look the same,  but the "prongs" on one end of mine lift perpendicular to the sleeve then angle 90 degrees then straight and perpendicular to the bearings.  The other side "prongs" lift from the shaft the same bend 90 degrees, but then have a curve making them perpendicular to the sleeve then more curve almost even 180 degrees away from the bearing.  Unfortunately I did not notice this until after the sleeve was out and was wondering if it makes a difference which end of this sleeve (prongs really) goes on which side of the hub/bearings.  I hope someone understands what I mean.  I already have it installed and am hoping I don't have to remove and reinstall everything.

Thanks!

Front the service manual.

If you have installed the collar - and everything spins nicely, then I'd say you are good.  From what you've described - it seems that the ends are likely meant to go a certain way (to "hold" the collar centered during assembly/axle installation), but once the axle is in place - the centering "feature" is not used.

Thanks for the help.  Wheel spins great (after I had the bearing too tight to start (hit them in a little too hard.  center sleeve wouldn't budge, lol).  Wanted to add a piece of advice as well.  I had used All Balls bearings.  Not lookin for a debate on whose to use.  I sent an email to them (All Balls) and got an immediate reply that you should install the bearings on the brake side first where the bearing retainer ring in screwed in then complete the other side (Speedo side) just seating the bearing snug to the inner sleeve.  Sent an install guide as well.  The other reason I mention this is in the set was another bearing rubber seal larger than the one inserted into the bearing retainer ring.  All Balls mentioned a lot of bearing sets may include an extra seal as the sets are generic to many cb750 models so it is not needed for the automatic.  And as always check the schematics.  It did not show this piece.
