Chains? sprockets??
« on: April 16, 2014, 03:45:07 PM »
I can't believe how many different opinions there are online about different chain/sprocket setups.  I'm super confused by this point and basically want someone to pick my parts for me.  I have a 77 CB750k.  My stuff is wore out.  I believe I found that the stock setup was a 630 chain with 15/41 sprockets.  Is that true?  My bike does run a little high in the RPMs at 65mph and I would like to improve that.  I'm not a cafe racer and I don't ride the bike a ton.  I just like a good ol sunday cruise.  I see a lot of guys go to 530 chains but some say to stick with 630, what's the real answer here?  is there anything special I'd need to do other than buy 530 chain with 530 sprockets to convert?  Where are you guys buying your chains and sprockets as well?

This is what I'm thinking, a regular 530 chain (no o-rings or special tools needed) with steel front sprocket/aluminum rear and a ratio that cruises good at 65mph.  Thoughts? Blessings?

a 530 chain is plenty, 110 link,  (not x/o-ring)
DID is a good brand ~$40 for a standard chain
RK is another good brand.
I went with a 17/48 set of JT sprockets and an RK 530 Heavy Duty chain.

I like the 18/48 for easy cruising, it takes the edge off the rpm's.

I like 17//48 because it moves when I want it to - and I am 250+ pounds.

530 chain is plenty for the bike.

This is exactly what I needed. I'm going 530 chain with the ratios mentioned above. Will I need special tools for a non-oring chain?

You need a riveting tool if the chain has a rivet link as most of the o-ring/ x-ring chains have
Solid rivet link need very powerful tool like on branded Whale. Hollow rívet link is easier whith plenty of cheaper tools.
Clip link no specific tools except what you probably have, screwdriver + plier

nope.  standard chains typically come with clip-type master links.

how about the rear sprocket material? Alloy or steel? Does alloy wear faster than steel?

Original was steel, why not go steel unless you're making a race bike and every lb counts.

also, is this the type of standard chain we're talking about?  it says 400cc max.

I guess a better question is what tensil strength do I need?

Considering modern materials and that 1000cc+ bikes now use 530 chain I wouldn't worry about tensile strength with our hp output.

I'm using 530 chain and the next time I get sprockets I'll get 17 and 47t.  It's lasting great so far.
