Honda cb 650 custom project

I am Receiving a Honda cb650 custom as a project bike to mess around with. The bike has been sitting in a garage for years. I'm just curious on where I should start? Should I even try to start it first? I'm sure the gas tank is disgusting inside and probably needs treated if not a new one. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to bikes but I'm getting it for free so I figure I might as well try to get it running right and driveable. Any input would be awesome. Thanks guys.

when you first get it i would start by washing it, turning over the motor using ratchet to make sure it free, and charge the battery. the carbs will need to be cleaned before you even try to start also. your right about the tank, but there are some ways of cleaning it with vinegar and nuts and bolts, do a search and youll find some good info on that. once u kno the motor is free and carbs are clean, hook up a dummy gas tank and try to fire it.

Pull out the sparkplugs and drip a little engine oil in the holes before you turn over the engine by hand.

Yeah I kinda figured that I would have to clean out the carbs. From what I've seen looking around here it doesn't seem to bad. Just alot of remembering how it all goes back together and making sure all the holes are clear of debris. It's been sitting for about 5 years and I know it ran before they put it away so I'm hoping it's not to bad. Any suggestions about that carbs? Anything i have to watch out for? Thanks again.

soak the carbs in simple green for 12 hours. then use guitar string and run it through all the jets. youll be amazed at how clean they will be

Do not attempt to soak a full rack of carbs in simple green.
This is not how you clean carbs.
