550f seat questions
« on: April 20, 2014, 04:45:50 PM »
Yeah, odd one but I am trying to recover my seat.  the cover is for a 77 550f seat, but the foam and pan are from a 75.  I can get the front or the back on right, not both.  I am using a heatgun to make it all stretch n whatnot.  Is there a little smaller seat on thr 77?  If so that gap between tank n seat would look bad.  this was marked as a OEM replacement part.  It has a gold colored HONDA on the back.

Any and all input would be welcome.  The more flames, the better stretch on that vinyl?  ;D

Is your 75 a K or F seat?  They are different among models.  But, all Cb550F seats are the same size, any year.

The guy said it was a F.  Unless the guy is wrong?  Too many variables an not enough actual skill on seats.  First time for this stuff.

Thanks TT.

If you don't have the old seat pan with which to compare, post a picture of what you have for us to identify.

Many mistakenly believe that a CB550 Four is an F model, simply by looking at the side cover badges.  Not so.  K models also say Cb550 Four.  But, thare are many part differences between them; Seat in particular.

One obvious tell is the tool pouch storage.  F models have that pouch stored under the tail of the seat. 75 K models have the tool storage pouch on a tray in the frame up toward the front under the seat.

I can't tell about the cover, but the pan and foam appear to be CB550 F in origin.

Where did you get the cover?

I recall some vendors telling me their covers fit both F and K models.  But, in fact they are different.  And different again from the 77-78 K models.  There are three different seat pan and cover styles for the CB550.

It was a Christmas gift.  Im leaning twords a K.  Its just not long enough.  where it needs to stretch it has the stitching.  Unless I let a pro do it?  I would rather do this myself.

Any hits to see if this is a K cover?  I am having issues evenly heating this thing.  Heat gun work one side at a time. lol I was putting it over a oil filled heater.  Worked sort of.  Always cools too fast.

Any better angles I can get?

Put the cover over the foam and take a pic.  I can't see the general shape of the cover with it in a heap.

That's looks like a 550F cover to me. You gotta wrestle with that thing for while to get it on. No instructions for it?

Open those teeth up under the pan, but don't snap them off.
Work the front then back onto the teeth and pan nice and centred.
Then work the left and right sides down and under. Work the cover onto the teeth of the pan in opposing edges so you get a nice even fit. Close those teeth down at then end to secure.

Best advice, pull like m#%@#er. I wrestled for over an hour to my cover on with the piping on correctly.

LOL start at front work back.  Put plastic between foam and cover.

My friend came over.  I did need another pair of hands.

Thanks for confirming this.   I was determined to make this work.  :D

Once I get the ol 550 back on the road, I will have pics.  In the middle of waiting for front brake parts and other bits.
