So I found this in the pan today.. what happened??
« on: April 17, 2014, 02:36:19 PM »
Hey guys, Long time lurker and I have used a ton of the information available to get my bike, 1977 550K, running great. I want to say thanks for all the information to get me going!

Everything was great, Plugs were a nice tan, revving wonderfully and idling like a champ. Then I was riding around the neighborhood about 40mph when the back wheel locked up and I heard some clanging and banging in the transmission.

First action was to drop the pan and I found this.. I have no idea what happened. Obviously a FULL rebuild will be in order as opposed to the top end rebuild I just did..

So here's what I found when I dropped the pan as an initial, "wtf happened".

That's a shifter fork and teeth from a tranny gear! Wow. Catastrophic failure.

Was the fork in the pan too? If so either the shifter fork shaft broke or backed out enough for the fork to fall out causing the gearbox to lock in two gears at once. The bracket (behind the clutch) that locates the shaft from backing out towards the clutch often is bent and allows end play....but that is ridiculous!

Take a look inside.

Don't think we have ever seen a shift fork in a pan yet since I have been here if that's the case, that is a drastic malfunction. How many miles did you have on the top end rebuild ? Seems like there should be more debris. Any chance something fell inside while doing the top end ?

Definitely shift fork and the pieces are gear teeth. Wow the shaft must of broke if all that came out of the oil pan! And the shift fork hole is intact too  :o

You can drop the motor, turn it upside down and open the bottom case and go from there

Had a date tonight, hence the delayed response.
Ive had about 10 miles on it since I installed the speedo cable and probably another 15-20 before that.

What you see laying there is exactly what I found laying in the pan, no metal shavings at all.
Oil and a bit of sludge at the bottom as expected. Honestly I was kind of surprised by how little was in the pan.

I was wondering if I could flip it and take a look, That's actually relieving to know. Is it possible to replace the shredded gear and reintall the shifter arm while its flipped?

I will show you guys the carnage this weekend for sure, thats when I'll have time to start this process. luckily the gf is going out of town so plenty of free time, though she did help me put the engine back in the frame last time..

Definitely won the race! I was one brake light away from being able to hit the streets!

The teardown will obviously coincide with a beer. And another 5 pending what I find inside... haha

those teeth look like the edge of 2nd gear of the 2nd 3rd cluster that slides into 5th. I wonder if the tranny somehow tried to be in 2 gears at once and locked the transmission? Its an odd one thats forsure?

Time for spare engine shopping if you don't have one. Maybe just swap the top end over.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

As promised, here is the carnage. Surprising not too bad! only the two gears involved seem to be damaged.

Is there any chance of locating these two and just replacing them? Everything else as of now seems to look okay! More inspections as to why this happened will happen this weekend but I think this is a good stopping point for this evening.

Any suppliers of gears out there? or do I really have to find a donor...

Thanks in advance!

Send me a PM if you want another tranny.

You've already got a donor ^^^^ you pay shipping and it's yours. It's from a 75 550 but it should be the same.

I have never done tranny work on a 550 but wouldn't there have to be more than just two damages gears to allow a shift fork to fall out ?

So what's the diagnosis Cap'n? I'm curious about the fork shaft. The retainer on the right side of the case is often bent and allows some end play but even if it wasn't there the shaft can only back out so far with the shift mechanism plus the clutch basket there. It had to be part of the issue.

I think the bright side is you didn't end up with a mouth full of asphalt when that wheel locked up. Good Riding!  ;)
