I just think he should start with a ratty bike, not the one in the pic. I should talk, I put a frame kit in . I cut my frame. Sigh. I am not  a purist, Go for it, just use a different bike.

This behavior is sickening - and surprising to me.

If someone told me that he came to this forum and got this kind of reception, I wouldn't believe it.  My experience here has been so positive - so many people doing builds of different styles and offering insight, guidance, information, encouragement, support, and commiseration.

Guess what - I hate baggers, hardtails, open exhausts, and I find concours-quality restorations boring.  But I have seen some builds of every one of those types of bikes here that I appreciated for the skill of execution, and the dedication of the builder to their own vision.  I never dreamed that we'd see this kind of pile-on of ignorant and rude crap on this forum.

Noddy, my earnest advice to you is to not bother posting here.  This forum has to be the best source for SOHC4 knowledge, but they're not rare, obscure, or complicated bikes and I can't see how wading through this kind of abuse is worth it.  Surely somewhere there's a place where you can find support from people who aren't operating under the delusion that a CB750 is equivalent to a Faberge egg or a Stradivarius violin.

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

The other part of my free advice is to always start with the nicest bike you can get your hands on, regardless of the project.  For every thing you can see that's wrong, there are 10 things you can't see until you're deep into it.  To take an extreme example - even if you're building a new frame, having a straight original frame as a reference has to make things easier.

"Thin skin"? Dude, if this was the reception I'd gotten, I woulda taken my 550 and put it right back on CL and forgotten about it.

This is embarrassing. Syscrush is right- these bikes are not rare or special. It's like people in 2034 freaking out about someone doing something original with a Honda Civic that's already been riced out. You like 'em? Great, that's fine. But don't use your love for something as an excuse to trash someone who has a more realistic idea of what he's got. Start with the best bike you can- solid advice for anyone.

Shocked here too about the reception this idea has gotten--not cool. Do not listen to these people, man. I am sure there are plenty of those who will support and appreciate your project right here. No need to go elsewhere. All of the naysayers and other purists be damned. Definitely go for it, and good luck!

I don't think this is about you or your comments Bart. Lots of us (myself included) jumped on this band wagon, but it's gone past being fun. There's a fine line between poking a little fun and cyber bulling but 9 pages is ridiculous.

We'd be better served if the title and location of this thread where changed to better reflect the content. Pissing on People! Now that better reflects the nature of the thread.

He Dusty, nice to see you have an opinion mate but your obviously not familiar with anything outside of the US, once upon a time these bikes were reasonably common here , just like the Z900's but now they are all expensive and getting quite rare, thats probably why the first few people to comment, before it all went south, were Aussies....

Ah, you make a good point. Thanks for the check on that. They're common as houseflies over here, despite the hipsters driving up prices for them.

Yes, same thing here, its bloody hard to get any parts at all here without hocking one of your kidneys, a few imports around at the moment but they are all coming in at around the 8 grand mark untouched, straight off the boat,  we are really not trying to bash this guy, just trying to save what could be another lost 750, remember the old saying, " there's more than one way to skin a cat", thats was the general theme here .... ;)

This is me also. My bike is a ways from being stock but could be put back. I would never do any frame cutting (tabs, etc.) other than the frame kit which is something I believe Honda should have done in the first place. If you want a chopper....buy a chopper frame. My bike is a 75K so it wouldn't be the end of the world to cut it up but I don't see the purpose of doing that just for the sake of eliminating an unsightly tab that holds something that I'm not using.

So what kind of bikes ARE common over there?

They were common in their day but we only had a population of around 14 million in 1975 for example so common then is rare as hens teeth now. We have all year round riding here so lots of Gsxr,s Harley's, sport bikes and tourers and the likes, lots of scooters as well, you pretty much go to bike shows to see 1970's bikes, quite rare on the street and getting very expensive..
