'81cb650c exhaust(4-4) on a '79 CB650.
« on: May 24, 2007, 10:28:54 PM »
I just fitted a 4-4 onto my '79650 today, gives a sloghtly deeper growl than the stock 4-2's did, not any louder(possibly a little quieter?).

My problem is I no longer can use the stock sidestand now.
I had to chop off the spring mount for the sidestand(on the frame).
The exaust HUGS the frame on the instde(for cyl2), on the left side frame rail.
I intend on drilling and tapping the sidestand mount and machining a theraded post for a new spring to hang off of.
I am going to mount the new post so there is no interference with the new exhaust.(hopefuly!)

But I need to fing a sidestand with the spring mount on the side facing away from the motor.
Anyone know of a bike that uses a kickstand that has the springmount on the outside?(I'll post pics later)
Besides the '81cb650c?(wife almost hit me for swapping exhausts, so taking her sidestand is outta the question)

Will a generic bolt-on sidestand work?

I would like to see pics of this.

here you go.
I like the look of the 4-4 a better than the stock 4-2 that it came with.
I had thought of buying a new 4-1, until i got the '81cb650c.
From what i have read on exhausts, the 4-1 gives good top end, and the 4-4 gives best all around performance.
Since this is my daily driver to and from work, i think the 4-4 will actually suit the purpose of this bike a bit better.
The extra wiight that comes from this exhaust is negligible IMO, since i am going to add hard bags, and weight is not a serious consideration on this bike.

The first 2 pics are of a side and end view of my '79 with the 4-4, the second to last picture is of the '79 sidestand mount, the last picture is of the '81 sidestand mount.

That exhaust looks good, especially on our bikes.

kslrr, the front end is off a '79 cb750 DOHC.
Well... the lower legs, brakecalipers, brake rotors, and fender are.
My front rim is off the '79650, with the disks from the 750 mounted on it.
The fork tubes are origional to the '79650 as well as the tripple trees/headlight bucket.

The most noticible way to spot the front end differences is the fender, '79 750 fender is plastic, the '81 cb650c has is chromed metal fender.

I have done MANY mods to this bike, the front end and recently the exhaust being the most noticible.
What i really like as far as mods I've done so far are the pod filters.
they opened up the motor quite a bit. Along with the carb modifications, they keep me smilin' all day.
Almost didn't go to work today...

P.S. i'm adding some pics of the front ends of the 2 650's i have to show the differences.
The front of the '81650 kinds duckbills up a bit, the 750DOHC fender hugs the tire.

Just noticed, the 750DOHC legs keep the axle of the wheel centered to the legs, the '81cb650 legs have them ofset from C/L of the legs.

The dual disk 650's had wider triple clamps for extra clearance on the extra caliper.

I really like the way that 750 fender hugs the wheel. Sure gives it a clean look in my opinion. ;)
