Hello!

I bought this CB last year and I am in the process of transforming it into a Cafe Racer.

On the jack.

Delivery from DCC!

New rear shocks mounted and overhauling forks!

This did not look good! Good riddens!

Clip ons and bar end mirrors mounted! Oilchange, Valves adjusted, new plugs, plugleads and electronic ignition mounted.

Overhauled the carburettors although they did not look too bad, ultrasonic cleaned and new gaskets.

The seat has arrived, I am very pleased with the look!

I converted it with a built in selfmade led taillight.

That's a good looking bike. Hang on to those stock parts, in case you ever want to go back to original condition, since your mods are all fairly mild/cosmetic thus far. I see that you swapped out the stock fork ears (rust collectors) for a set of aftermarket mounts.

From the pictures, it looks like you "bobbed" the front fender so that all is left is the fender mounting bracket. I do not believe that the bracket provides enough tortional rigidity to constitute a functioning fork brace. If you are going fenderless, you may simply buy a Tarozzi fork brace, which will keep the forks from twisting and improve front end handling.

Anyway, just my $0.02 for what it's worth. Enjoy your bike.

The fender is cut just before and after the bracket so the fender is in place adding the same stiffness as before(I think). I am thinking of getting a Tarozzi fork brace as that is probably much stiffer and better than original.

The project is further along today, but I am filling in what has been done up to date!

Acewell instrument installed!

Velocity stacks installed!

Test fitting the Yoshi replica from Carpy! (Loud!) It will be sent to ceramic coating.

Seat fastened and bracket for plates in place.

I added a chrome list on the edge of the tank and seat, to keep a classic feel.

This is how the bike stands today! As you can see the rearsets are missing, the brackets are on the way from Cognito moto so that is next!

Wow. Through the wonders of posting, your build looks pretty much complete (for now).

I would recommend the Tarozzi brace, because the stock fender mount is just a bracket to mount the fender, and it does not provide any significant structural rigidity to the forks.

Glad to see you kept the original paint color, the bike looks really good. I would say get better tires, but what the hell, if you like the look, enjoy.

But would that rigidity change much if the fender were still installed? That is, other than that bracket, what provides fork stability in a stock 550? The reason I ask... In my opinion the stock forks are extremely wobbly and need additional bracing. A fork brace is really the only way you can address this problem, short of swapping your front end to larger diameter forks. This is why USD GSXR forks are such a popular upgrade, or even 75-77 GL1000 forks (37mm) for a more period-correct look.

The mount for the fender is not a brace. If you apply lateral force to the fender mount, it will flex and flex back once the force is removed. A fork brace creates a solid bar maintaining the forks' parallel position so they do not twist of flex as much. On the 550, it is difficult to mount a fork brace AND a fender because there is not much clearance under the brace.

Godffrey, one of our members mounted a fender on the bottom of a Tarozzi fork brace: see pictures 22-44 of the following. I am thinking of doing the same for my 550.

Today I took apart the brake again and changed to EBC pads and installed a new vented brakedisc from cycle-x.
Then I found out that the arm for the calipper was siezed..... So i took it apart, cleaned it up and gave it some grease!
It looks like the brakes work a lot better now, but I think the calipper is flexing a lot when i squeeze hard on the brake.... is that normal?

With the new brakedisc I lost 1Lb of unsprung weight, anyway I think it looks cool!

The caliper shouldn't be noticably moving. Have you installed what's left of your fender on the correct side of the caliper arm?

Man, your bike looks a lot like mine is eventually going to be! In particular the color scheme, low-profile fork covers, & headlight bracket. Luckily you're in Norway and I'm in Minnesota so we won't have to fight each other

It is installed the way it was before I took it apart, but I guess a lot can happen to a bike in 37 years!

i like what you're doing with the bike. and agree with what has been said before: keep those stock parts as complete original bikes in good shape become harder and harder to find, and will keep their value.

Looks nice, but I have decided to go fenderless and add a tarozzi brace.

While I am waiting for my rearset brackets I am making a shifter arm.

Very Nice , when I first started to read this thread I was worried because your Bike was perfectly fine the way it was IMO. But you did it justice, This was the bike that got me started in Motorcycling back in 92, my girlfriend had one and I got tired of riding on the back of HER bike, so I went and picked up an old 76 KH400 ( or KZ ) . Love the color , I also like that honda just put super sport on the tank and no other graphics. Sometimes I wish My 750 didnt have the fat black stripe . Good job.
