I like the look of the bike but I also would have liked to see some contrasting colors for my own personal taste.

I have to admit with the blacked out look and that hat he's wearing, my first thought was "An Amish motorcycle builder?""  :D

I definitely think murdered out is not only overdone, but usually done poorly. I like the contrast for the electronics side panel & fuel cap cover though.

Cafe fan, I agree with you on the shocks. I also don't understand why he powder coated them. Aren't the Hagons available in black? Maybe he wanted them with less gloss, I suppose.

I imagine it's awfully hard to keep that hat on if he decide to go over 30 mph.

So I won't be digging down into my cases, just doing a top end rebuild. Is it necessary for me to do anything with my oil pump? I might at least replace o-rings, but not 100% sure.

I don't have it with me at the moment, but I think Hondaman's book recommends looking over the pump.

Mainly curious because I'm about to order some new pistons clips & a tensioner gasket & would just throw the o-rings in with the order to save on shipping.

Yep.  That's what I did.  It's not difficult at all to take the oil pump apart and replace the o-rings and springs that come with his kit.  And it gives you the piece of mind that a very vital piece of keeping that engine going has been refreshed.

Dropped my jugs off at the machine shop to get that final dowel removed. Tonight I'll spend some time trying to get my exhaust ports cleaned up. They're so grimy who knows how long it'll take.

Back from the machine shop with a less than superb report: it looks like they used a chisel or something to get the dowel out. The hole is marred & seems to have some metal markings down inside.

I haven't been able to slide the new dowel in normally & suspect that I can only get it in by tapping it down into the hole, in which case it'd be difficult to remove again without damaging.

A few curse words buzzing about my head & looking for any advice you guys can offer. There is still some rust down in the hole where it was removed. I've tried removing that rust to see if that's the problem, but will need to soak it in penetrating oil, I think.

Yea, it was $19. I hadn't used the shop before. B&R machine shop off chapman highway in Knoxville, TN. It came recommended from a guy who works with my dad. So I was hoping it'd be ok.

Is there a workaround for this? I'll let it keep soaking overnight & try again tomorrow evening. If I can't get the dowel in, is there some milling that another shop could do to fix it or should I start scoping out new jugs on feebay?

Great. There's a cycle shop about 45 minutes away that is run by a vintage bike club member I know. I'll ask him what machine shop I can trust around here. Then if need be, I'll have them do some fixing for me. Thanks, calj737.

Cleaned up my exhaust ports & most of my engine last night. Exhaust ports still have some grime in them. I just used a steel brush & WD40 to clean them out, but some of the nooks are tough to reach with the head being assembled, valves in. Same with the engine. I used gunk degreaser on the engine, rinsed with spray bottle, then went over it with WD40 rust remover. Lots of tiny places that are tough to get to. Starting to wonder how clean is clean enough? Haha.

Gonna make sure my stud holes in the crankcases are extra clean, then I'll try to install the APE studs tonight using advice from here: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=107040.0.

Hoping I can get out to the bike shop on Saturday & they'll have a solution for my cylinder hole.

If you plan to use Loctite when you insert the APE studs, make sure you don't use it on the ones that are oil passages.

The oil holes are the two back center holes only, correct? In the photo below, one has an o-ring & the other doesn't (I have two replacements).

Also, in the photo of my cylinder head, those orange colored rings are removable right? I bought a new set & just want to make sure those are the same thing & meant to be removed. Any tips for how i can get these out? They are jammed in there & I don't wanna do any damage to the exhaust ports.

Yes, the two rear center ones have oil passages and will need o-rings replaced around them.

The orange colored rings are the copper exhaust gaskets and yes, they need to be removed.  Just take a thin, flat-handled screw driver and stick it behind it and pry gently.  They'll come out pretty easily.  You should have 4 round ones in your Vesrah kit.

Thanks, Ron. Got those copper rings out no problem. Can't believe how much grime is down in the exhaust & head. I'm gonna tape up/cover the top of the head & intake/exhaust ports then soda blast when I get home tonight.
