'77 CB550 clutch reassembly
« on: April 27, 2014, 01:13:59 PM »
So, after an 8-month hiatus I am finally doing some work on my 550.

I pulled the clutch cover, disassembled and checked out the clutch and am now putting it back together.

I know I have the clutch plates right, and I replaced the shims that came off of the basket, the question is how tight are the bolts that hold the pressure plate onto the springs.

On my Enfield the plate was not fully tightened and how far down you screwed the plate had an impact on the clutch.

It appears on the 550 that the plate should be fully seated on the four fingers that fit through the springs.

Is that right? The factory shop manual doesn't appear to say one way or the other.

Thanks

Tighten them down until they bottom out and then a pinch. Don't be a fool and swing on them.
Fully seated is correct.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

OK. That's what I did.

Thanks

I just had the same question on a CB500 -- was tightening them down carefully to try and equalize pressure -- and then they bottomed-out.  :) Makes sense!
